You should try to get back your personal possessions that are in the car. I believe that if it is written off and scrapped, everything that is in it then belongs to the insurance company. Not 100% certain, but something you should check on.
  • Is there anyone else around you can can help until your dad gets back from holiday. You need some time to recover not just phsically but mentally also. I'm glad you and your children are OK.

I hope your appointment went well. Its good news that the other driver accepted liability so hopefully things can get moving a bit. Your probaly still in shock which is why your forgetting things sometimes, try not to worry to much. I know what you mean with the what if, I was like that when we had our accident. If you can, give your insurance a call regarding the courtesy car but check the details of what they give you. If you paid extra and have the courtesy car included in your insurance, then they should sort you out with a car quite quickly. It all depends on what type of insurance you have. Although I have fully comp, I did not take the extra of having a courtesy car so my insurance referred me to a company they use, which is Drive Assist. Try not to go with them as in my experience and many others, they are not so good. So I had to get the details of the third party and get a hire car through them. So basically I now have a hire car, which I got today. It may take some time before you are given an estimate regarding the write off, as the system they use has crashed completly and been down since Monday.

The garage that has your car will look at the damage and an engineer from your insurance, will also look at this who will decide the state of the car. From what I know it is the engineer who decides. He will give you a price for your car, which is what the value of your car is, not what you paid. I know its sounds very confusing because it was for me and I learned all this from MSE lol but I have been given lots of valuable advice from here. My car is also a write off but I haven't been given a price due to their system being down and they said it could be down until next Monday. My only damage was the bumper but due to my car being old and the parts being expensive, that's why at the moment they are saying its a write off. Once the engineer has seen the estimate from the garage, then he will tell me.

If your are given an offer, ask if you can think about it first, don't accept what you are given straight away, find out the value of your car, which you can look on glass and parkersguide. Let us know how you get on. Big hugs x
  • thank you again now i have another twist to everything. my 4 year old has always been a bit naughty but since monday he has been uncontrollable at school- i had to have a 45 minute meeting with the teahcers yesterday (i myself am a supply teacher and have worked there too). my 4 year old has becaome very angry, silly and repetative. the teachers are concerned and have set him targets. i am sure it is due to the crash-he had been ok and on friday the teacher rang me at home to say how happy she was with him! this has all since the crash changed.
i have been feeling teary and lonely so what has he been feeling? he saw the car hit us, the air bags activate, his mummy hurt, his mummy hyperventialte, helicopters, sirens , fire engines and police!
i have sent him to school today and have booked an appointmnet at the doctors for 4 oclock-just to talk to the dr about him.

Im sorry to hear things are not going to well. Your son is only young and surely he has suffered shock too. Its good your taking your son to the doctors. Everyone deals with shock in different ways, some peopl go very quite and withdrawn and others the opposite. You know how you felt, its more distressing for children. Its really hard to say what to do, some say its good to talk to your child about what happened and some say it won't be good as it will bring them flashbacks. Im sure your gp would be able to advise you better. Keep a note of his behaviour over the next few days and weeks. His sleeping, eating and behaviour, so if things do not improve, when you go back to the gp, it would be easier to remember things. Good luck and hope it all goes well at the docs.

i forgot to ask about the hire car!!

    Phone them back then!

Also, you could get a taxi to collect your belongings from your old car and claim back the cost.

Before you jump the gun and buy a new car, wait for the insurance company to write the old one off as it may be repairable and wait until you have agreed a monetary value for your old vehicle and recieved a cheque. The hire car should provide enough cover for all of this to happen without you needing to rush out and buy a new car.

Also, always barter about the cash the insurer is willing to give for your old car. The first offer is rarely the best!

Very unlikely if the airbags have deployed, it will almost certainly be a write off.. hope the doctors goes ok for you and your son.

    Hyper-ventilating.

    Bad leg.

    Sore neck.

    Feeling teary and lonely.

    Memory loss.

    Son's behaviour problems.

Jesus. I've seen some people milk these things with a "bad back" etc but this is going to the next level! Especially seeing as you all walked away fine from the accident.

we went to the doctors-she has known my son sinc ehe was little and she does think that the accident has upset him but she does also think he should get over it very quickly.we have to go back in 2 weeks time-school are keeping a home school diary about his behaviour etc.
the car is classed as a a write off and the engineer man rang me- he actually says that we might get more for it thatn we paid for it so that was really good news.
to the post above- thank you if you think i am milking it- i know that we are very lucky considering that one of the other cars involved the poeple i think are still in hopsital and were airlifted to hopsital. but i am very upset by the whole incident- my 2 children were in the car- i had to act strong for them when really i wanted to cry, i should have gone to hospital too but the ambulance would not let my childrne come with me- who was to look after them? i do have whiplash and already have started physio for this- and have 2 more known appointments.
i doubt i will claim for compensation- as to be honest i just want this whole incident behind us-in the past and to never haunt us again.

i arent going to bother with a hire car- i doubt i could drive really as my neck is quite stiff and the children will need car seats. we went in a taxi to the doctors today and a lovely couple on my street lent us car seats to go in the taxi-my 4 year old was quite scared.
i am going to wait until my dad gets back and then ill probably try and drive his car first without the children in then with them in.
as i said- i know we were and are so lucky-but it still has upset me and totally shuck my little world.
thank you for the kind words and help.
