Boiler question

We have just moved into our new house and the boiler is a very old Olympic (either 20/35B or 38/50b) I know this as the people who lived here kept the original brochure!

Anyway I posted elsewhere about it being faulty as the bathroom radiator and one of the bedrooms heats up when only the hot water is set to on. We had a repair man out and he told us there is nothing wrong with the boiler it's just because it works on a gravity system and the closest couple of radiators heat up just because.

I was going to get it replaced and same bloke quoted us £1700 to supply and fit a Worcester Bosch 30Si. Apparently the pipe work is already 12mm and he won't need to change that.

I would get other quotes if we were to go ahead but now I am wondering if we should bother at all.

Thoughts please!

This is a very old and inefficient boiler, but this does not automatically mean it needs replacing.

To go from the size of your boiler to a 30Si is rather extreme to say the least. I realise I havent seen your property or heating system, but I would have tought a 15Kw or 18Kw boiler would be ample if the one you've got keeps you warm enough now.

Our house is a semi with downstairs extension. There isn't many rads downstairs. One in the hall, small one in the kitchen on a wall that's due to go and one in the dining area. added to this we have 5 other rooms downstairs, there is no rad in the living room! I was thinking we would have a multifuel burner in the living room anyway and if I could get away with that boiler for a while we could do that instead for roughly the same cost?

I don't know how cold we are going to get. Haven't been here long enough. I do know that one of the reasons I despised my old house by the time we moved was because it was always too hot. We had the heating on about 3 months of the year and not all day. I prefer a cooler environment I think.
