Hi Everyone
I am thinking of upgrading very old wap phone to a smart phone, LG GT540, now Im sure that this will be a great improvement and show me what Ive been missing. I have done a little reading about the differences between the versions of android and wonder if this will make any real difference to me, will i be cursing not spending a lot more (this phone is around £99) or will I just be happy because its better than what I have already? Is the differences in android versions huge?

FWIW it looks as though an update for the LG GT540 to Android 2.1 is imminent.

Instructions have appeared on the LG site here:

thanks, that will make the decision a lot easier:j:j:j those instructions for backing up look complicated, not sure I like the idea of loosing all contacts and apps etc everytime they update, is that normal?

I kept all my contacts ....Just lost my apps :(

    That was on htc hero.

You can back them up and just reload them.

I didn't and will just download them , I have not any paid for apps so it is not so important for me

I would imagine so. However, I wouldn't bank on them providing subsequent updates, I'm sure they'd much rather sell you a new phone!

your probaly right Stompa, was there a big leap between 1.6 and 2.1 then, is that why they are updating. Maybe if I give it a week or so before buying I could get it to update before inputting contacts etc

LG Optimus One is due in October running Android Froyo 2.2 followed by Optimus Chic in November, Chic has a 5meg camera and both have capacitive touch screens where the 540 only has a resistive screen.

Both run the same 600MHz processor as the 540 , no prices as yet but maybe worth the wait as LG is likely to price very keenly to regain market share .

I was going to buy the GT540 from Carphone Warehouse at £95 + £10 top up but will wait now to see what happens with the One and Chic.

I am hoping for around the £110 mark for the One and £130 for the Chic as LG have suffered badly with declining sales due to the popularity of Smart Phones and are expected to price aggressively to regain market share .

Only time will tell but another few weeks is not long to wait for a better phone.

You might be interested in watching the LG launch for both phones as it contains some great working screen shots, it is in 2 parts on Youtube.

No problem I will give you the heads up on any new info, please do likewise.

I will probably wait till both phones are released before making a decision, give it a while for any problems to become apparent.
