MOT - What to expect

Hello all,

My car's due its MOT and I was hoping you lovely lovely people could help me predict the possible problems. Now I realise this is an impossible task so let me be a bit more specific - I've followed the MSE guide, checked the tyre tread, lights, windscreen wipers, suspention et. al., but what's concerning me now is my previous test which listed pitted rear brakes as an advisory.

Now, needless to say, I did not deal with this at the time (let's call it young naivety rather than old stupidity), and, if we're being honest, I should probably admit to not really knowing what pitted brakes are... in a bid to stop my ramblings let's cut to the chase with the following questions:
  • What are 'pitted brakes'?
  • Are they likely to have developped in to more of a problem in the past year?
  • What's a rough sort of cost for getting them fixed.../replaced? - It's a ford focus if that helps...

TLDR: How much is my MOT for a ford focus gonna cost me given that I had an advisory for pitted brakes a year ago which I didn't act on?

A presumptuous 'thanks',

Inamabilis

What exactly did they say last year, it could be the disc that's pitted but more likely be a brake pipe.
Whichever neither is a big job, impossible to say a price without knowing more.
A lot of garages advertise a free brake check, before going for your Mot go to one of these and see what they say.

I suspect you have disc brakes at the rear. What often happens with rear disc brakes is that the brakes are never applied with enough force to fully remove the rust (braking force is always higher at the front wheels, reason being if your rear wheels locked for some reason this would make you lose control of your car - think handbrake turns as an example of this being done by someone who knows what they're doing, can make the car turn very well and unpredictably in the hands of most drivers). This means your discs rust up, and eventually the metal pits. If you're lucky you'll get another advisory. If not you will need new discs, and I would advise that new pads are fitted at the same time.

To prevent this happening you need to be more keen on the brakes.

I advise strongly against going to a place that openly advertises this. A check, especially from the likes of Kwik Fit, is rarely "free" when they find problems that do not exist and charge the earth to repair them for you. A decent garage is the place to go.

Remember an advisory is merely that. I am sure many people have had an advisory and that item was never given a mention on the next MOT and the one after.

My advisory was that "the rear brake disc(s) are slightly pitted".

It was a (previously) local garage. I've since moved house so don't know any trustworthy garages and as such.....

...this is what I plan to do.

More information that I can give? Or not really...?

    Thanks again

  • You don't have to take it to a council depot, plenty of honest MOT places about.

Anyway, they'll be readvised again this year, possibly. Could write a long post, but essentially nothing to worry about.

Plenty of honest ones about pal, trust me. They can't all be dodgy, I note a lot of council run depots are now offering MOT repairs too :p

They will be readvised possibly because all brake discs unless brand new will show some pitting, especially rear discs on lightly braked cars.

I would explain changes recently made to the MOT manual with regards to brake discs, pitting and scoring thereof, but like normal on here I'll just be accused to talking rubbish, or called a thief or similar because shock horror, I tend to stand up for the motor trade. Because if you believe everything you read on here, unless you work for a council depot you are trying to rip people off all day......

It may be readvised, talk to the tester for clarification on whether they need changing, generally they don't.

    Regards,
    Andy

i went to the council depot and my xsara failed TWICE.. actually went to Citroen nearby and it passed ( was a free mot offered to me as im part of the xsara owners club) so if there was any sort of incentive to gain work Citroen would of failed it.. baiscally what they said to me about brakes was if they pass on the RBT then they pass them..

^^ You have to remember that dealerships tend to employ young inexperienced staff.
Of course they're going to treat you well, one wrong move and the owners club will never go there again! how many hundreds of members?
