while in safe mode with networking, try downloading and running hitman pro. if it still hangs, then I think it's hold CTRL key down, right click on HMP and run as admin (someone'll correct this bit if it's incorrect, top of me head and all that)

edit - just checked, yes it is the CTRL key....age, you know

Just run the Quick Scan with Malwarebytes. Hopefully that will take less than 30 mins.

Open malwarebytes and switch off its 'heuristics' scan (Hope thats what its called)

Do you have access to another pc/laptop that connects to the internet also a usb memory stick?

If you do and Malwarebytes will not complete a scan on the laptop download Superantispyware Portable from another pc/laptop onto a usb memory stick and then plug the memory stick into the infected computer and run Superantispyware Portable.

Thanks for all your suggestions. DS1 has removed all important docs from the laptop so I'll try the malwarebytes short scan first.

I do have another computer (this one) so I will be able to run the portable scanner if required.

Is there a link for hitman pro for it I need that?

Malwarebytes short scan ran fine and no problems detected. Trying the full scan again now

spybot ran all the way through - just 84 browser entries to 'fix'

now running malwarebytes with the heuristics (whatever that is) disabled.
