Aliens always speak english as they have universal translators - as we don't know any alien languages....:rotfl:
Do you know I had never thought of that but it's obvious really isn't it? They have to speak English because the English always assume that that's what 'foreigners' will do, and Alien isn't taught in UK schools.
Kerri, I had forgotten about the Tardis. Ditto Babel fish. Both British inventions. Just how far will we go avoid actually getting good at other languages?Miggy

Hmmm...I'm not sure that there isn't an element of looking backwards with rose tinted specs on regarding past times perhaps?
I'm sure you're right. Poverty, abuse, deprivation, lack of opportunity, wars etc. etc. - all have gone on in the past, with the addition of death and suffering from diseases we can now prevent. However, I wonder whether the fact that a hundred years ago there hadn't been a World War may have been an 'innocence' factor? Appallingly (I never know how to spell that) as people had already treated each other, nobody knew about the trenches, WMD, gas chambers and all the other things that have since happened.
Also, as information was slower to disseminate and less available, our disasters and difficulties were more localised. It was people we knew who suffered: we weren't faced with huge-scale disasters elsewhere in the world over which we had little control. So although horrible things happened - and maybe people were more often helpless in the face of them - the scale was perceived differently.
All this on a Friday morning...Miggy

You're right about the flow of information - which is some cases also meant that it was easier to spread propoganda.
However I'm not sure whether this turning point of WW really is such - look further back to pther examples of extreme brutality towards each other - Atilla the Hun, the Crusades, even Henry VII having wives beheaded left right and centre (i mean, I'm sure Queen Lizzy would have loved to send Philip to the blocks on one or two occasions but it wouldn't be allowed 'these days'), and the purging of the muslims from Spain - these are all examples of extreme brutality and 'ethnic cleansing', not so diff to WW (except in terms of technology). But I think we find these more 'acceptable' because they are consigned to the history books - there's no one alive with living memories of the hardships and personal experiences so it's easy to stay emotionally removed from them - unlike WW which happened within the liftetimes of grandparents/parents so touches us in a tangible way.
Hope we haven't scared Ani off her own diary with all our musings.... Ani -how's things going? xxFeb 2015 NSD Challenge 8/12JAN NSD 11/16

Hi guys.
No you have'nt scared me off and no i have'nt been away,( i wish ), its computer problems. Its got to the stage where its taking me hours to get the computer workable, ( me being a bit of a technophobe). I could'nt even log on yesterday, however, i seem to have fixed it temporarily? I'm sure it won't be long before it gives up the ghost completely, which is going to take more cash i don't have ( or my £2 pot). It takes hours to get the computer working, time i just don't have, but i need it for work. Arrrrgh. It seems to be fine, this morning, i'm not sure for how long, though.
You're all barmpots :rotfl: I stopped watching Dr Wh* when it started to be transmitted in colour :rotfl: It was never quite the same without the daleks. I've never watched the evolution of Dr wh* or the likes of star tr*k etc, to me, you could never replace the likes Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner and co, so i guess it was the actual people that impacted on me, as opposed to the story / series.
Yes , its easy to look back on everything with rose tinted glasses, is'nt it? and not so easy to look forward with rose tinted glasses. Hmm. I've still got it in my mind to buy some seagulls, though.
Got to rush, off to the big e today. Won't be back until very much later.
Love to you all

Quick. Let's have a Star Trek, Deep Space Nine, and every other Star Trek spin off party and a massive Dr Who party with Daleks before ani gets back....:D
I love it, barmpots. Know where you are from then.
I am at home for the rest of the week, took DS to nursery, 10 day incubation period after first spots they said, maybe you can come back Wednesday... I have appt in the afternoon for him to have injections. But will have to see if he can still have them.
so not going to bother going back for Wednesday. It's a bummer as I will need to make the money up, otherwise will be short on payday, so means long hours when I get back and probably have to take some holiday too.
Better get ebaying....
ani, about your computer, please have a look at your local freecycle or freegle group. As I said people will give away towers, etc when they upgrade and there is probably nothing wrong with it, except an upgrade.0 -
Yay party!
