There have been rumours traffic wardens would ticket cars in some counties, if the car was over 50cm from the kerb, so that's probably a good figure to aim for.

50cm?!!!!!!! You'd need a gangplank so your passengers could reach the pavement.

I usually aim for about 4"
  • Its not just how far the passengers have to walk its the traffic coming from behind you too - 50 cm is huge to stick out

    Ask a sensible question.....

Its not me who's taking the test - its Junior.

The reason for asking is that we went out today to have a practice of all his moves, and although he can so a parallel park, he ends not up bang up by the kerb, but is in line with the car he's reversed around.

In real life the solution would be to pull forward slightly and then reverse again so you are closer to the pavement but I don't think you can do that in the test !

Yes you can move and readjust, as long as you make it clear you are not finished with the manoeuvre. Since I believe you can be fined if you are more that 30cm from the curb these days I would say that would be the max distance to allow.

I think for the distances for women driving Audi Q7s in London is different, I gather they are allowed up to 1 meter from the kerb and the vehicle is allowed to be at an angle.

If you know where your back wheels are in relation to the kerb you should be able to get within a few inches easily if you're test passing material.

Ah, sorry you failed. Or maybe you could say you were half right.
Both are actually acceptable now in the UK, even though manuever was generally used in the US, so you should have listed both in your first post if you're being picky.
But it doesn't help the op really.
  • I passed my test in feb and was taught to leave the car no more than 6 inches from the kerb otherwise move forward and readjust on the reverse.
  • I did my test in Jan and i'm sure I was at least 30cm from the kerb when I did the reverse park. I agree with the poster above... 6 inches is probably a good amount to aim for. Ive been driving for ages now - I can park easily, but I still have problems getting 'close' to the kerb... to the point i've damaged all 4 alloys!
