Driving Test Manovure Question

If a person has to do a reverse parallel park manovure on their driving test, whats the allowable distance you can be from the curb?

  • I believe it is a reasonable distance rather a specific measurement.

No idea but I'd be astonished if anything more than a foot was acceptable.

Better to ask yourself what you would consider acceptable if you were a passenger in the car and wanted to get out. Would you prefer to step out straight onto the footpath or into a deep puddle in the gutter?

Park the car in a position where you would be happy to lock the car and walk away. If it looks wrong to you, it will certainly be wrong to the examiner, so if you see a problem, sort it.

Like other posters said, there is no exact measurement, but hopefully the points above illustrate what is "reasonable and acceptable". As the driving test is a test of safety and competence, a fine degree of finesse is not expected.

There have been rumours traffic wardens would ticket cars in some counties, if the car was over 50cm from the kerb, so that's probably a good figure to aim for.

You sure your spellchecker is in uk english
    "maneuver"
  • Ask a sensible question.....

Its not me who's taking the test - its Junior.

The reason for asking is that we went out today to have a practice of all his moves, and although he can so a parallel park, he ends not up bang up by the kerb, but is in line with the car he's reversed around.

In real life the solution would be to pull forward slightly and then reverse again so you are closer to the pavement but I don't think you can do that in the test !

  • You are allowed to move forward to reverse back again on the test. I think it gets marked down as a minor though. But it's better that not moving forward and ending up bumping up the kerb which would result in a fail.
  • Is that part of the test, judging by the standard of driving after people have passed their tests up on the curb covering most of the pavement would be correct?
Nothing to see here, move along.
