Where do I start with a McDonald's franchise?

Hi all,

I'm a long time reader but first time poster on the Money Saving Expert forums. I've been thinking about this for the past few years now and I'd like to find out a little bit more about it because it's something I'm really interested in doing and I think I could do well from it because I live very low key and would be able to reinvest the profits into buying more franchises and maintaining them to high standards. I also have a few years experience of running a business and it's annoying me passing the sites everyday that I know would be perfect locations for a McDonalds outlet and the demand is there because I've asked people about this. I'm not sure what I'd need to get started with a McDonald's franchise, can you help me out?

Phone MacDonalds? I know for a Domino's you need £250k to invest.

... but I still know nothing about how to go about it!

Welcome the fantasy world where you can get other people to do your research for you. Tried looking on MacDonald's website for starters?

I've heard McD's are very selective with their franchising, and you're going to need some decent money to approach them. As others have said you're going to want to be able to get your hands on £250K minimum.

The obvious problem I can see is any site that has potential would have already been taken. That means you'd have to buy an existing unit or be prepared to go into a new shopping centre of entertainment complex.

Also have a think about what your management approach would be. If you want to be hands on remeber there will be shifts from 6am to the small hours of the morning, 7 days a week. You're going to have to put a lot of trust in shift managers and if you're not careful you'll be there 16 hours a day every day. Franchises with shorter hours may be more appealing if you want to be hands on.

OP, if you could lay your hands on £250K would you really want to invest it in a McDonalds franchise?
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • Go for a rustic cafe, bistro, farmhouse feel, the one in Lymeregis does a roaring trade, tables and benches, homecooked rustic food, much better than prob 10% beef!

I would invest if I had £250k. Have you seen the queues in most branches?
