Cancelling Sky Digital

I've been a Sky subscriber since the 1990s. But with rising fees plus the fact we rarely watch the movies or any of the other channels we pay for I decided to buy a Freesat HD box instead.

I have just posted a letter to Sky informing them of my cancellation because I didn't want any hassle on the phone, and I cancelled the Direct Debit by online banking. But now I read in a forum that Sky are bloody minded about insisting on a 31-day notice period. They took the last £40 4 days ago so are they going to insist I pay another £40 for service I am not going to use and how will I do that since the DD is now cancelled?

I cancelled my Sky after 10 years for the same reason as you. My payment date was 17th so I phoned them on 16th and told them I was giving them the required notice.
I explained they could take the payment due the next day and after that I would be cancelling my direct debit.
They of course tried to talk me out of it with lots of offers but I said no.
I heard no more about it from them.
If you have cancelled the direct debit then it is possible to work out what you owe them and send a cheque which is what a friend of mine did.
The one thing you can be sure of is they will hold you to paying the full amount.

You pay Sky in advance. My last bill paid for the 20/09/10 to 19/10/10

Sky now insist on a 31 day notice period, give them the notice, they try to convince you to stay, tell them no, in 31 days you will no longer be with Sky.

Just curious, do they email confirmation that they have "agreed" the cancellation?

Yes they do email confirmation of your cancellation instructions which states the canx date and details of o/s monthly payment due - in our case it was classed as 'outstanding' two days before it was even due  - but that's another story.

We canx back in July this year over the phone (what a battle that was!!) and are still awaiting a credit due to us. Can honestly say don't miss $ky that much. It's surprising what there is to watch via Freesat and Freeview albeit not the 'latest' series or imports which $ky offer.

just cancelled on monday ,used freefone number ,bloke was very polite. told him I was reovering from op. and staying in bedroom , offered free point in room if I stayed ,no thanks , was told 31 days notice required , but as I paid in advance would have only £2 odds to come of next s/o
    was..paying £20 x12= 240 plus vat increase to come .so i've bought a humax box..http://www.humaxdirect.co.uk/product.asp?ProdRef=10076&cat=Factory
...320 GB storage == 9 monts of payments to sky ,using on spare tv . clearer picture ,5min to set up and more onscreen info ,should have changed long ago.
  • Yes the picture quality from the Humax box is much better. I purchased an "A grade" receiver from Humax Direct which is one that has been returned and reconditioned by the factory. It cost about 2/3 the price of the new one and apart from a couple of small marks and the fact that someone had written a post code on the handbook you wouldn't know it wasn't new. And it means it will pay for itself in two months of Sky subscriptions instead of three.
