Glad to hear someone got a good pc from Medion. Friend of mine ordered 3 bargain refurbished systems, including one for my son's Xmas pressie. He's just waiting to hear from them because they delivered 3 broken tfts, one tower with the wrong power cable, and one totally wrong pc with a lower spec!0

OK Received the PC on Monday. All the parts and PC look brand new !
Set up was a breeze, removed all AOL crap and the 90 day virus program and all unwanted programs.
I then installed Zone alarm, AVG free, Edwido, Spy bot, Adaware, and Windows defender. ( That aught to take care of the little blighters ! )
Went online and downloaded all the updates for Windows and finally installed a few programs like open office and Nero etc.
All went well and the PC is performing as it should.
I have not connected a TV input so not tested the card yet.
I will increase the ram to the 1 Gig sweet point soon as 512 seems to be a bit slow.
All in all well pleased with PC at the cost payed.0 -
Medion have been in touch with my friend, and are replacing all faulty/wrong items. So the service may have been terrible to start with, but at least they're sorting it now.0

They have been in touch with me and canceled my order, they said the system shouldn't have let my order go through as they were out of stock. Dohhhh!! my pc is fit to pack in very soon!, never mind you win some you loose some.0

Update on the earlier report of setting up a £199 system and it's +/- points.
The friend had actually ordered 2 of the £199 systems - one for self and one for sister who just wanted a general purpose surfing/Office type home PC.
The one I set up had started to make a burning smell (from the PSU) when he turned it on after a few days (though it was still looking okay on screen) so immediately turned it off as didn't want a potential house fire. Although cost about £2 in phone calls to get through to Medion after a few tries and longish waits, he had a refund promised promptly (as no replacement system available) and the system unit collected within 2 days (for some reason they refused to take anything except the system unit!!! so will have to wait and see how that pans out)
The other £199 system (grabbed back from his Sister) is working fine - for now - and seems the bargain it looked to be originally.
Meanwhile we nabbed one of the £149 systems to replace the £199 system as despite poorer value, still a reasonable system for the £. HOWEVER what turned up was a NAKED base unit - ie not just NO keyboard/mouse as advertised - but no power cable, no modem cable, not even a manual, and no software CDs. Emailed to complain but no response yet.
Plus/minus of the £149 system as received:
+ System unit for c£15 less than Amazon.co.uk will sell you its Windows XP for
+ 256MB PC3200 RAM easily expandable as 1 SIMM
+ SATA hard-disk interfaces galore
+ "AGP'ish" riser that can take MANY (upgrade) AGP video cards (but not all)
- no power cable, no modem cable, no manual!
- no software CDs
- noisy hard-disk drive (ie the seeking noises)
- small scratch on the fascia by power switch (specs said maybe cosmetic issues, but the £199 systems looked perfect)
As previously mentioned both these Medion systems need a good couple of hours of downloading of Windows Updates and Intel updates, and anti-virus and anti-spyware utilities, etc etc so only suited to mildly PC cogniscenti.0 -
Update re the original £199 "Medion Refurbished PC System 4440
Genuine Microsoft® Windows® XP Home, Celeron® D 346 3.06GHz, 512MB memory, 160GB HDD".
Just looked at https://www.medionshop.co.uk and this system is available again (and the £149 one not).
If you prefer a NEW rather than refurbished one then my local Aldi has what from a cursory look was an identical system at £349 with a 3 year warranty - ie £150 extra for "new" and 2yrs 9m warranty.0 -
Good price too:j

Delivery was within 48 hours!
Observations:
- No refurbished/cosmetic issues apparent on his model
- "Assembled in Germany"
- 512MB memory was a single stick, leaving one slot free
- DVD Writer was a Sony
- The keyboard and mouse were USB and NOT PS2
- Came with 90 day eSure Anti-Virus
- Home page is ALDI.COM so presumably these were German or UK ALDI returns (they were advertised by Aldi 9-12m ago)
- The 160GB hard-disk is partitioned into 3 volumes C:/D:/E: : about 48% 48% 4%
- Preloaded with lots of AOL software - ie immediate Control Panel Software Remove needed
- Needed a lot of Microsoft online updates (fortunately friend had hi-speed cable broadband link)
- Only 90 day warranty - ie same as 'basic' Dell warranty on NEW systems!
The only architectural weakness is I think the motherboard graphics which are really suited to 2D rather than 3D. However Scan this weekend have an AGP 6600GT for under £40 which was 3 times that price 18m ago!
VERY impressed indeed for the £204 total which includes:
Estimate value/replacement cost:
MS Windows XP Home £150
CPU/Fan £45
Memory £40
Hard-disk £40
Motherboard £35
Case/PSU £35
Keyboard/Mouse £15
DVD drive £25
Memory card reader/USB panel £10
TV/FM card £25
"Delivery by Dell" £60 (versus £4.98 from Medion!)
Sun's Star Office 7 was £50 (now Star Office 8)
Various other software ££
So that's somewhere £400-£500 worth
No guidance found in their literature about how to "enhance" - eg to add in a floppy drive and a second DVD drive (left over from friend's old PC). So will have to find out how to bend out the metal blanking, and whether to slide in from inside or outside, without damaging the fascia for ourselves.
Only oddity was the front SLIDING cover over the memory card reader/USB etc connections. Took a LONG time to work out how to open it!
So here's the MSE usability TIP: The sliding cover has a 'silver' arc protruberence across its middle - this is purely cosmetic. However the similar BLACK arc protruberence just above the silver slider is the RELEASE - ie it needs pressing in to 'unclick/latch' the silver cover which then slides down.
Bloody hell where do you buy your bits from !Wannabe DFW NERD: Not fully fledged member yet !
