how much do you pay for rice?

Options
Stupid question perhaps But I eat rice about 3 times a week and my hubby is forced to eat it 3 times a week too. Up to now I have been using uncle bens 10 minute boil in the bag. I know! I know! its not exactly cheap but its quick and convenient but now I am thinking about buying long grain loose rice and cooking that. Surely it cant be that hard! But what type of place is cheapest? I usually shop at Tesco, sometimes Asda or Aldi. We have a large ethnic area and there are loads of Asian shops but the parking where they are is so bad i would have to walk a mile to get there and park!

I buy 10 kg's Tilda Basmati for around £12/13. Both Tesco's and local asian supermarkets sell it in big bags for a similar price. I would buy the 20kg bag but we don't have room to store it!

If I had the room... Costco is quite cheap for large bags of rice...
Otherwise I buy at Tesco in the largest bag you can get organic long grain rice :)

Dog gets rice quite a lot to bulk out her meals (dog aka the hoover) so she has her own rice (the cheapest I can find at Tesco)

Loose basmati rice usually costs about 80p-£1/kg in the supermarket, if you buy a bigger, more economical size. I would recommend going to an Asian supermarket, or a cash and carry, if you can, it would definately save money. If you ask nicely they might even let you use their carpark ;)

i buy this sometimes too, but a supermarket own brand works out cheaper. They don't do such big bags-5 kg .
  • Tesco value rice is dirt cheap and not very good quality. The normal range is much better.

Loose rice is easy to cook using the steaming method. Even easier using boil and drain method but not as good imo. You could also buy a cheap rice cooker and it makes rice cooking much easier. You can also cook rice in batches and freeze them and heat them up in the microwave. You must make sure that you dont leave them warm at room temperature for too long before freezing them because you'll get food poisoning.

We go through rice a lot, so now I buy the 100lb/50kg bags of rice from the asian shops. Haven't bought for ages, so can't remember the price - will check with a mate. You get a choice of good quality long grain or basmati in most shops (Tolly Boy or tilda) & it's very convinient.:)

We buy Asda's smart price rice, not sure at the price though.

But a handy tip for anyone, I discovered this by accident one day. If you thoroughly wash the rice, and I mean thoroughly, till you get no more starch in the water, then microwave it for 18 minutes it is perfect - lovely and fluffy.
