Personally i wouldn't touch shares in HMV in a million years! The market is in a stage where HMV cannot sustain itself without radical restructuring along with a plan to account for the rapid decline in physical music sales coupled with aggresive pricing policies by supermarkets.

I am glad we all had this discussion back in September as it made my mind up not to buy shares in HMV, today the share price is half what it was back then, so thanks everyone for the good input.
  • Saw the news today and remembered this thread so I googled and found it. It's interesting how things play out.

HMV needed to change several years ago, aside from downloads on iTunes the market for buying music on the high street is in terminal decline in my view. If you can buy a CD cheaper in Tesco why would you go to HMV. I've got a couple of CDs I bought in the early 1990s with their label still on at £14.99, equivalent chart CDs now are £7.99

Unless they get their act together I can see them going the same way as Woolworths.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Don't forget the HMV Group not only sell CD's/ Blu Ray DVDs etc but also Waterstone Bookshop and the record label!

I looked at HMV not long ago, the declining CD and DVD market doesnt really bother me, thats been happening for years; but I wont invest because they have too much debt, and they will be in serious trouble if they go through a bad period of sales (like this christmas) and cannot manage their debt
Faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

Around 20 Waterstone outlets will be closing in 2011.

Also let us not forget that MKS and HMV share the same chairman. Cosey!
  • Long term I can only see the price falling. They really cannot compete with the likes of Amazon and as more and more people become comfortable with internet shopping they will only suffer more.

I remember when I popped into a HMV to buy a DVD. Saw Big Trouble in Little China which was close to £20. Amazon had it for a little over £3. And that is by no means a rarity. Same goes for Waterstones.
