Giving up being a vegetarian

  • If humans are the only species capable of reasoning, how is it that this "reasoning" involves the decision that they are a superior species?

I could care less about debating morals and ethics with someone that disagrees with me. I am not trying to encourage you to eat meat – I don’t care if you or anyone else eats it. What I do care about is people who think they are doing the best for their children and end up killing them (see much earlier on in the thread). However if you are determined to press on with the subject, there is a food chain in nature and mankind is at the top of it. The very fact that you are expressing your views on the topic makes my argument for me you as a human are expressing choice and using your intellect to do so. Anyway Mother Nature can be extremely cruel with often the very young and the very old taken in hunts by wild animals but not many of your type are rushing to convert lions and tigers to vegetarianism. You obviously know you would be wasting your time because only humans have the ability to reason and alter their behaviour from something they perceive as wrong. I am one of those who do not perceive the of eating meat as wrong, you do so you refrain there is nothing to debate.
  • Apparently the polar bear is the only 'natural predator' of man - i.e. the only one that would eat us just for the hell of it, not because it was defending itself.

All hail the Polar bear, top of the food chain!

You seem to be getting a little "hot under the collar" here! Consider your blood pressure - especially given all the red meat that you appear to consume and the negative effect that this will be having on your heart and other vital organs!

I am sorry to have to acknowledge something that I knew to be the case from the beginning - that there is often very little point in attempting to debate the ethical and moral issues of vegetarianism with most meat eaters, as many fail completely to understand or appreciate a vegetarian perspective.

Although some may try, they are unable to present a valid defence for their position.

They may start making vacuous (and frankly risible) statements.

Then having tried but failed to offer any justification for their argument, they may resort instead to issuing personal insults.

It saddens me to see that some people have such an unenlightened attitude that they cannot even discuss a subject.

I can see however, why you would not wish to engage in serious debate on this matter (and particularly not with someone who disagrees with you). It is because you represent a position that is both morally and ethically reprehensible and therefore (as you have already demonstrated) it is one which is impossible to defend.
  • Oh dear I seem to have upset a philosopher. No matter I will be able to live with myself and my decisions without a troubled conscience. That redmandarin is able to identify the steps taken when someone holds a different view tells me that it is a regular occurrence for them. In other words they are frequently having to defend their stance. As for failing to understand and appreciate a vegetarian perspective that is not true. I understand that many people are vegetarian for a variety of reasons, some because they think it is healthy (it’s not and can kill babies), some for religious reasons, some because they dislike meat and some because of the morals and ethics of killing other beings. I understand perfectly, I simply do not share those beliefs.

If you are still reading redmandarin does your compassion extend to vermin? Rats, mice, fleas, germs and so on.
