Scrapping Car

Hi all, I was hoping someone could give me advice on scrapping my car.

I was going to drive it to the scrapyard tomorrow but the person who is coming with me to bring me home just told me I wont get as much for it with the wheels left on it. Is this true?

I'm not sure if the yard is one that will just crush the car or pile and plunder it, there are 2 chipped keys for all the locks which all work and I believe those keys are very expensive to replace (guessing it would be cheaper to change all the locks than to buy a new chipped key and all the better with a full set), one tyre is almost new (that wheel mustn't have been on the ground when driving! lol). Interior is tidy so carpets/seats/dash could be resold. Windows work and doors are all ok so there is quite a bit of scope for quite a bit of dosh in selling the spares. Oh and I have the code for the radio too. I'd do it myself but I'm a girlie and have other things to do before tinkering.

So do you think I'll be penalised for driving it in and scrapping it with the wheels left on?

It's a Ford Escort, anyone got any ideas how much I'll get for it?

Thanks

  • My personal opinion, put it on e bay, spares or repair, you'll much likely get more.

    Whats wrong with it???

Thanks for your reply. It's MOT is almost up, it will definitely fail with welding of the chasis needed, 3 new tyres, head gasket on it's way out I believe, it over heats unless I drive it with the heating on all the time. I smacked it into the kerb in Feb with the snow and ice and damaged the driver side front end. I drives pretty straight but really rattles on that corner and the steering wheel wobbles - it does literally wobble! Brakes are a nightmare, had complete new brake system put in a couple of years ago and it still failed, had to get it tested at another station where we knew it would pass. Having said that, the brakes are fabulous, really work well with no pulling (severely tested very recently on the motorway when a driver pulled on doing 40-50mph!) Indicator arm switch busted so tail lights don't work (indicators and headlights do), I've checked fuses and it's deffo the switch. Oh and the dashboard light doesn't come on either. The driver side door won't unlock from the outside (but I believe that's something to do with the mechanism inside the door minor issue) it locks from the outside ok. Few scratches n dents here and there but it's 14 years old! lol Rust on the tail gate and the tailgate won't stay up! Water is getting into the boot from somewhere. Oh and I think the gearbox is on it's last legs as sometimes I have problems getting it into reverse and just recently I've had probs getting it into other gears too.

Otherwise, he drives wonderfully and I am sad that he's going to car heaven (although I have named him Satan) but I just can't go through another hellish MOT with him. I wouldn't want to pass the car on to anyone else - I'm not sure why but, I feel protected in it, I trust my mechanic with my life, but I just don't think anyone else would be safe in it.

Oh I forgot, for some reason the exhaust is dropped and scrapes the surface over lumps/speed bumps and the rear view mirror fell off after the last MOT when the bloke doing the MOT broke it when moving it.

Would you risk putting it through an MOT? lol Anyway, I have just bought another new old banger so I just want it off my drive.

    Thanks anyway.

Oh and I forgot to add, the rubbers are hanging off the windscreen wipers and one indicator bulb has blown. And the rear windscreen wiper works if it can be bothered! lol He really is a mad car!

    Your friend is right.

I have took a number of cars to the scrape yard (Metal Recycling centers) and after they take the mass weight of the car, they take £5 off per each wheel that is left on the car, including the spare.

The only way around this is to tow the car to the scrape yard with the wheels removed, which could cost you more than the money taken off whatever you get.

Although I paid £5 per wheel, it may be different where you are too.

    Hope this helps

Thanks Sassy, that's a bummer isn't it! Still I want rid of it and wouldn't feel comfortable selling it for spares or repairs plus I have an old oven to take in too which I am not sure will fit in my new old banger - it's a KA and I have a holdall in the boot so the boot is now full! lol

    Thanks again

Depending on where you are and how the management of that scrape yard feel about you being presented on there property, (Health and safety risk) they may allow you to take the wheels off at the point of sale, retaining your wheel fee.

However, is it really worth £25 for all that trouble, and of course, you'd need to take them away and find someone willing to dispose of the tyre's correctly.

I hope you find a resolution to your problem and get what you expected :)

    That's probably why it's called a 'scrape' yard. :)

You need to ask for salvage quote from the various scrap yards. Scrapping is the easiest method, but ebay and auction are alternatives.

If you are sticking to scrap yards as your chosen method (I do as it is the simplest) of disposal. When you ask for a quote you can ask for

A pick up quote from your door
A drop off quote when you take it to them

Then you can ask "will you give me a better price if it has no wheels - or if I take 4 tyres off your hands when I arrive?"

You don't have to deliver a car with no wheels, nor do you have to remove your own cars wheels when you get there, it is exactly the same to the scrap man if you take away with you 4 crappy tyres from his yard.

What to do with the wheels/tyres?
You could try taking them to your local council civic amenity site, but they may refuse. You could put them 1 at a time in your wheelie bin. You could remove or cut the tyre off the wheel, put the steel wheels into your civic amenity metals bin and put the now smaller bits of rubber wheel either into your civic amenity site or wheelie bin.

Or ask your local tyre fitters, as far as I know they only charge about £1 for tyre disposal included in the cost of the new tyres.
