i have started the ball rolling hopefully!!

Hi Everyone,

Well I have been reading these boards for a long time now and have finally found the courage to fill in the debt remedy form and submit my contact details so now all I am waiting on is a phone call from a company called Grant Thornton. Has anybody dealt with them? I was recommended them through CCCS. Have about £33,000 worth of debt and hopefully will get an IVA sorted out. I have sorted the new bank accounts out so now I need to let my creditors know what is happening. This might be a stupid question, but do I hand write them a letter or can I send emails? I have also seen something about not putting your signature on just to print it? Does anyone know what this is about? What should I expect when I do get a call? And does anyone know what a realistic budget should be for 2 adults and a 3 year old? as soon as I post this I know another question will pop into my head!! Any help will be much apperciated :)

Hi and well done this is the first day of your first step on the road to being debt free.
When I started mine I typed a letter explaining every thing to each of my creditors and posted them, as for not signing them there are some dodgy debt collectors who might copy your signature.

Dont call them Graham for a start... GRANT Thornton!

No real advice yet*, simply listen to what they have to say, and then for my tuppence worth I would ring another company and compare what you're being told. I assume that since you've been referred to GT that you are in NI.

Remember, if you enter into an IVA, you're committing to a company for five years... you're going to want a company that are easy to deal with!

*Take particular note of the figures they allow you on your Income and Expenditure... then come on here and post it up - I'll see if there might be a few exta £s you could save! They shouldn't try to force you to commit to anything, take their advice, thank them and tell them you'd like to think it over!

  • We are curently in the process of entering into an IVA with Grant Thornton - who were recommended to us by our local Council's Money Advisor.

My hubby and I have both met with a lady from this company who was mega helpful and certainly knew her stuff.

She didn't try to force us into anything and made clear all our options.

The best thing is that they don't charge us a penny! If they take the proposal to the creditors meeting and it's refused - the swallow the cost. f it is approved - they recoup the cost from the other side.

Now whether this is because we are ging through our local Council Money Advisor I'm not sure - but I think it applies for everyone who uses them.
When looking at the climb in front of you, don't forget to look back once in a while and see how far you have come:j

It does, that's how an IVA works... or SHOULD WORK!

Some companies try to charge up front fees but you should avoid them. Your IP will be paid by agreement with your creditors from the money you pay - there'll be no extra bill!

Lol I thought I had got away with my little error!! Thank you for your advice. I just want to see if anyone had a bad time with them, I am in Northern Ireland so I take it most work gets referred to them! 5 years won't be long going in compared to the lifetime of debt we could be in, but i understand that if you are going to be with them during the duration of the IVA you need to be sure what they are oing for you and that you can work with them. Will post later and let you know how it goes. Oh and will they do and I&E on the phone or will that be in writing, any how I will post as soon as I get it. Thanks again:)

Hi, are you also in NI? Did they do a home visit? Please let me know how you get on with them and I will do the same, good luck on your debt free journey :)

If this meeting goes to any depth, it's likely they'll ask about your Income... Monthly wages for you and your partner, child benefits, and all other incomes.
Expenses, they'll ask about your mortgage/rent, rates, insurances, tv licence, car (petrol, road tax, insurance etc), electricity, food toiletries clothes, medical, phones...

Some of these expenses will be verified by looking at your bank statements or previous bills etc. Others are simply placed within a certain range.

As the phone advisor goes through these with you, just take a note of them yourself. Then the advisor will subtract your expenses from your income and this will be the amount you will pay each month.

I would be interested to review their I&E and see if there are further allownaces you could have!

***CCCS are a "charity" in the UK and therefore morally superior to all other commercial debt solution companies... except if that work happens to be NI when suddenly one commercial company is their moral peer (for a fee I'm sure). That company is GT!***

Sorry, what's NI? We got in contact with them through the Council as this is who they use. The lady came to meet with us at the Council Offices so no home visit and our Money Advisor also sat in with us.

I'm currently in the process of obtaining up to date statements ready for the Secured Courier who they send to collect the documents - which then do go over to Ireland.

I believe with a little push, you've just answered your own question!

CCCS refer Northern Ireland cases to Grant Thornton in NI... for a fee of course!

Didn't know GT had associations with councils!
