problem with Avast 5 definition update

Has anyone had a problem with Avast 5 virus definition updates? Mine is set for automatic, but it says "cannot connect to server". It is possible to download them manually. I have contacted Avast, who suggested different things, and looked at some files,they could not cure it, and finally recommended a firewall, saying…

I presume that avast! asked for the setup.log?

That may shed some light on the situation.

EDIT: What version of avast! do you have? Latest is 5.0.677
