problem with Avast 5 definition update

Has anyone had a problem with Avast 5 virus definition updates? Mine is set for automatic, but it says "cannot connect to server". It is possible to download them manually.
I have contacted Avast, who suggested different things, and looked at some files, they could not cure it, and finally recommended a firewall, saying mine may be stopping the updates.
I cannot disable the firewall, but uninstalled it, still the problem remained. I have XP Home.

Servers can get busy especially if there is a big update0

Thanks for your reply, when I uninstalled the firewall, it did not help, I also reinstalled the programme, that did not work.
I will try what you suggest again.0 -
Thanks for all your help, have tried a reinstall but the problem remains.

Why dont you just get rid of Avast and download this http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
Your still going to need a Firewall.
This uninstalls Avast completely http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility0 -
avast.setup needs access to the internet. Normally a firewall could be blocking it. (but since you removed it, this is probably not the problem...)
Can you try changing the proxy settings in avast!
Open avast! --> settings --> Updates --> Proxy Settings --> Change it to 'Direct Connection (No Proxy)-Scott-
