Just got Paul Gipe's Windpower book from the library, it's been updated and I'm the first to have it on loan. It's about 500 page thick and full of photos and info. Although Gipe is American it covers other countries' turbines; there's a picture of someone getting at the alternator of a Proven and other of its blade hinging and stalling mechanism. All in all at first glance it looks a great wind energy book; a bit expensive to buy, but try and get your local library to get it.

    Thanks for this.

I have just skimmed it but I don't think they have tested anything, simply quoted manufacturer' figures.

The Swift is claimed to give 1.0kW away from buildings yet 1.5kW on a building:confused:

The Windsave approx 500w - whatever that is supposed to mean?

Bed time reading ? for insomniacs ?

This is a classic case of "b******t baffles brains".

At one point in this tome The Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (John Prescott - remember him ?) refers to "commercial hereditaments". Be honest do you know what this means? - no googling !!!

I was talking to a friend about these the other day. He works for a company that installs wind turbines and he was saying that the B&Q ones aren't worth it as they're too small and underperform compared to the figures given. They also won't pay off your investment. Unfortunately the size of turbines that are practical are pretty expensive (£10,000 upwards I think), however as other posters have mentioned, a community turbine might be more economical and effective.

i live in one of the windest parts of the UK. I have no near neighbours, and plenty of open land.
We are expecting to spend around 20k to power ours and daughters new house.
In my honest opinion the BQ thing is a joke
