Vent: Royal Mail workers thieving again

Today I have received an empty envelope with the corner ripped open.
I'm pretty certain there should have been an item of jewellery inside.
From past experience, complaining to RM will not bring much compensation in any form.
It's not the first time over the years that stuff has gone missing on the way to my door. Years ago my Mum used to send me tenners and parcels that she could barely afford and some of those went missing.
I don't know how the Royal Mail workers who make a habit of thieving can sleep at night.

possibly quite easily on beds and matresses bought with their ill gotten gains.

Must say though, I can't complain about our local postie he does a great job, but I've seen quite a few scary programs about mail workers in the bigger UK cities...

Those who can do, those who can't, come to me for lessons:cool:

  • The lovely seller is sending me another item, hope they get compensated by RM for their trouble.

Who do you suspect is to blame here?
Sorting office staff or the person who delivered the item?

    How was the item packaged?
Was it fairly obvious that there was an item of value inside the envelope?

    How expensive was the item?
How did the poster send this item - i.e. which service did they use?

If it were me, I'd complain - not to gain compensation - but to register to RM that letters/packages are being tampered with and items are being stolen.
You may be just one of a number of people this is happening to in the same sorting office or round - if everybody had the same attitude as you and didn't complain, how on earth can you expect things to get any better?

I'm probably in the minority here but why be so quick to accuse people of stealing?

An envelope that may or may not have contained jewellery (OP was unsure as to what had been in envelope), first question then out of the thousands of items going through sorting offices every day how was your bit targetted? How comes 'they' found the one envelope with something of value in it? There is something odd here.

Jewellery of course should only go special delivery and that can be tracked, so where does the tracking show the envelope was damaged?

'Corner ripped off' suggests machine damage to me and if something was poorly wrapped inside it may well have come out without someone stealing it.

Yes things get lost and yes they sometimes get stolen, I helped once with a PO investigation where a certain of my ebay lines was being targetted, but how on earth did they choose an envelope that co iincidentally contained something of value?

  • What is this, an inquisition?

I suspect it was a sorting office or delivery office worker.

It doesn't matter how it was packaged/what it looks like/which service was used. RM are paid for safe carriage.

Why so many assumptions in your post?

'Compensation in any form' implies I'm not just talking about financial compense. An apology might be nice, some actual seriousness about the matter, not just no investigation and lip service.

As I said - 'from past experience' - I have regularly complained to RM - by phone and by email - and have learned nothing much is done on any level by them.

Yes, lots of other people DO experience the problem of tampering/theft with RM, I know that, everybody knows that.

    Oh get real soolin.
    There's nothing 'odd here'.
Theft is rife in the Royal Mail, it's common knowledge.
It's not to do with 'targetting', the thieves are opportunists, they have a look, have a feel, have a go if they think they can get away with it.
The item was actually a sterling silver item which was relatively cheap, somebody had it off, point is it would have nice to receive it!

i sympathise with you- i am in the process of a complaint to RM about a card that an elderly relative sent to me in July which still hasnt been recieved. Yes she was stupid enough to put cash in it- that is not the issue. the issue is that 2 card she posted to other family members at the same time were recieved and mine wasnt.

If people dont complain to them when their post goes missing or is tampered with, how are they supposed to know how much it goes on?

  • But people DO complain queen, as I have many times.
They know it goes on, it's rife.
  • It happened to us the other day. I missed the Postie at the door and came down to find a 'sorry you were out' card saying that he'd put the parcel in the paper recycling bin at the side of the house. Retrieved it to find a package my mum had sent for the girls: she'd wrapped a few bits of clothes in a carrier bag and wrapped that in parcel paper, half of which had been torn off. I would have thought machine fault if it weren't for the envelope inside being torn open too.
Not the first time either, my friend sent me a ring I'd accidentally left at her house, and all that arrived was an empty ring box with some torn paper taped up around it. F****** scumbags.

2 weeks ago one of my chums sent me what we think might be the last 2 seeds of a certain rare squash plant that we know of in this country, for me to pass onto the people that will grown them and multiply them and send them on to other growers [in the seed swapping world, it's a big thing].

When the envelope arrived, it had been opened and one of the very rare seeds had been split into 2. Right down the middle.

I'm not being funny, but it's a seed - it means nothing to you - it's not valueable to you but you had to go and break it.

For anyone who knows squash seeds - it hadn't been crushed - but split down the middle lengthways. With a clean edge that could only have been done by a knife.

Just lowers my opinion even further of the people that we pay to deliver our mail.

Still, if that's what you need to do to get your kicks - then I pity you.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
