Expensive Electric Bill

Hi,
This is my first post.

I have just received my bill from eon - it is ridiculously high compared to my previous bills.....I have just spent the past 40 mins on the phone to them and im even more confused.

So basically this is what is says on my bill:

Normal previous
32 read by us on 04 June 2010
Normal current
805 estimated on 03 September 2010

773 Normal kWh (kilowatt-hours) used

Normal previous

96 read by us on 04 June 2010

Normal current
869 estimated on 03 September 2010

773 Normal kWh (kilowatt-hours) used

Charges
Normal primary units used
219kWh at 20.02p each

43.84

Normal secondary units used
1327kWh at 10.05p each

133.36

I don`t understand it. Apparently the bottom is what they estimated and the top is what has been read???
I have recently changed meters (which is a two reading/ tariff meter?) yet apparantly I am only on a standard one tariff??)

HELLPPP me please im soo confused and do not understand this at all.
Someone explain it to me. :(

Before my meter was changed I was usually in credit and my usuage was lower.....

Thank you x

How come you have two different meter readings, both at normal rate, taken on the same day? It shouldn't take 40 minutes on the phone to the supplier for them to explain that one.

You sure one reading isn't a low rate?

Edit: Just seen you have a dual rate meter ... but are on a single rate tariff

The readings in June are actual; the readings in September are estimated.
I would check the estimated readngs against the current actual on the meter as the supplier has estimated you use 50% during the 'low rate period' (although on a single rate tariff you will be charged the same no matter when you consumed it)
If those estimated readings prove accurate, you may well be better off on the E7 tariff (but do the calculation, or ask the supplier for advice before agreeing)

If the estimated readings are wildly inaccurate, tell the supplier what the current actual readings are. :)

    It is very confusing.

Well apparently the 869 is an estimate and the 805 is the actual meter reading that was read on the 3rd.

So now I do not understand why they do not have two readings if they had taken two previously?

How do I read my meter? I have a new one which is all digital... I know that one reading is 866. I then have to press a blue button which changes the screen to 198.... is this my second reading??
    I`m soo confused....

Also, I have looked at my previous bills and before my meter was changed I was using around 850kwh for 3 months (during winter) then it went up to 1300kwh for the same time period.....

    Does this seem right?

Thank you for your help.... the man on the phone tried to say its because there was a standard increase in their electric charges??

    Hi xsammi_jox,

I’m sorry for the confusion. I appreciate that the statements can be hard to understand sometimes.

From the information you’ve provided, it looks like you have a two rate meter which has been billed from actual readings in June, up to estimated readings in September.

If you have a two rate meter (usually Economy7) but are billed on a standard tariff, we will take the total usage from both rates and add them together. This total amount will then be split between primary and secondary rates which are worked out on a pro-rata basis.

Most tariffs work out at 225 kWh of electrical usage per quarter (91 days) for the primary rate. All other units are charged at the secondary rate.

You were billed at the primary rate for 219 kWh units which would suggest the readings were 89 days apart.

So you were charged 219 kWh units at 20.02p per kWh which amounts to £43.84 and 1327 kWh at 10.05p which equals £133.36.

To get the exact charges you would need to add these two figures together, take off any discount and add on VAT.

If I’m right with my assumptions, I hope it helped.

    Thanks

That is not what the bill implies.

Both say they are estimated readings (of the two separate registers you have on a dual rate meter) for 3rd September.

The only actual redaings were those obtained on 4 June.

Hi, thank you for your reply.

I understand the workings out of my usuage... that is clearly stated on my bill.

I do not understand the figures of my usuage. If that makes sense.
It says that I have used 773 twice? Why has is been doubled?

If only one reading was given?

My apologies if I am not talking any sense but I am so confused.
Also, am I right in assuming that my second reading is on the second screen of my meter after pressing the blue button?

Furthermore. If I was on the two tariff to match my meter would my bill be any different?

    Thank you xsammi_jox

The man on the phone said that 805 was the accurate reading give by the BG who I switched over too. Which sounds about right considering my meter is now reading 866??

I am so flipping confused :mad:

So have they used both readings and billed me for both? Or used just one? Or am I totally missing the point here...... (I fear its the latter...)

Currently if I read my meter it says....

    866
    [press blue button]
    198
    ............

    ?? :o

Thank you for your reply again :)
  • This is my opinion.
You have a 2 rate meter, when you press the blue button it registers the night units. They add the 2 readings together to get your bill as you are on a standard tariff not E7.
On the Sep 3 bill they have estimated both the readings, getting the main one approximately correct but vastly overestimating the night units to be the same as the day units.
Now you have taken the readings you find the night one to be 198 instead of the 869 they esimated. So from June 4 you have used 198 minus 96 = 102 instead of the 773 they estimated. This should mean overbilling.
Just a further word of caution. Now you have a 2 rate meter not all suppliers add the 2 readings together so if you should change to one of them then you would be stuck on an E7 tariff which may not suit you.

So is this a final bill from Eon? Else where do BG come into this?

If it is a final bill, does the final readings relate to the start readings from BG?
It's surprising BG only gave the one registry reading to Eon, why didn't they give both? Are BG aware you have a dual rate meter?

Didn't you give the new supplier readings on the day you were informed you would be switched? If so, are they not the final readings from Eon (and the start readings from BG)?

yes, this is my closing bill.

I switched over on the 3rd sept.
BG took meter readings there and then.....

I am now also wondering why they would only give Eon one reading...or two with one majorly inaccurate....unless I am reading my meter wrong..?

I`m going to ring BG and ask them what readings they have and what information they gave to eon.

Thank you, from a still very confused xsammi_jox
  • Right .... so I think I have sorted it! :j

BG have the wrong low rate reading. . . I do not know how considering that the other is correct. Lady was very helpful and apologetic.
So I give her the correct readings.

    Which is now currently....

    866
    198
    in regards to the....

    805
    869

readings that was taken on the 3rd sept.

So I have informed Eon who have said that BG have to raise an ARD for them to revise my bill.

    Does this seem right?

Thank you all for your help.
