Morning all. I've been lurking for a while, and loving the makeovers. I have been doing a few SC bits but nothing major I might post them up one day...

Thought I'd let you know that my local B&Q have quite a lot of paint reduced to 1/2 price or less, lots of small (750ml) tins of coloured gloss and satin for wood type paint in various brands. They had some lovely colours that would work well with the SC look. In particular a pretty French Grey and loads of off whites.
MOstly around 4.99 a tin now but some were down to £3.
Not sure if it is just my local but worth a peek!
While I was there I managed to get a sample of that lovely green wallpaper with white polka dots to do the inside of my IKEA aneboda bedside drawers at last.
  • Hi, another lurker :)
I love the shabby chic style but it seems now to have become just old stuff painted perfect white, is the distressed look not 'in' any more ?

There are lots of variations and it is not just about painted furniture as is evident throughout this thread - but, as a general rule, I think people can paint their own stuff however they want! ;) :T

    hi
i dont know about others but for me i had the pieces of furniture (having said that we gave loads away too) and am kicking myself now!

anyway i sore what people had done and thought it was a way of giving new life to some functional but out of date furniture that i could still use.

i just chose to paint mine plain white and leave it at that, hope that helps
  • I never said people couldn't paint thier stuff just white, I was asking a simple question, is distressed stuff out of favour now, because I want to paint various bits but don't want 'just white' and wondered how to do it...

Stormchaos - A lot of people paint table legs and cupboard faces in a pale shade and then stain and varnish the unpainted top. Distressing is still "in" for those that like it but shabby chic generally covers a much broader area than the original imitation of a run down French chatau.

On old style generally and on this thread in particular we tend to answer any question asked without criticism and expect the answers to be received without offence.

Bebs - click on hmo's name and then on her homepage to see her blog - it's very good!

I would paint it then sand the edges lightly to make it distressed. I wanted to do that to my dresser but DH wouldnt let me, he cant see the point in painting it and then messing it up!

well i was quite offended actually, i only asked a simple question and the reply was

'I think people can paint their own stuff however they want!'

which wasn't even a relevent answer,
    thanks ladies:cry:
