i have been reading this thread for the last few weeks and i love all the upcycling (is that the right word? im a complete novice) that you all do, some fabulous makes!

im really wanting to join in and start a project of my own. can anyone advise me on what would be an easy item to start off doing? or perhaps post a link where i can find the how to's?

I started by reading all the posts in this thread and the one that came before it. Lately I'm a pinterest addict and many pics on there lead back to tutorials. Start with something smallish, like a stool/shelf etc. I look around my house and wonder what is bugging me most.. it goes to the top of the queue for a makeover then. I've painted a few cd towers lately.

my pinterest shabby board - by clicking on the pics they get bigger, then if you click on it again it's where I found it, and who else is pinning it, and what they also like on their boards, and so on... http://pinterest.com/chalkysoil/shabby/

I've painted plastic garden pots. The last one I did was with home made chalk paint, I used one dulux type tester post and a big splodge of polyfiller and a bit of water. Then I varnished it. At the time I only had inside varnish... So that pot has gone through the autumn and winter still painted but I noticed that the top rim is going nicely chippy distressed lately!! I think external varnish would have given it a longer life.

Over the years I've also painted them with emulsion and gloss and the paint usually lasts longer than the pot. Pitch black out there at the mo but may take a pic if it stops raining this week

Thanks for that. If it stops raining for tomorrow I will start one pot as I have some test pots in the shed and some string to make a pattern on it. I wasn't sure emulsion would stick without a primer. Ive got a few bits of paints in the shed I can use actually.

just mix the emulsion with polyfiller or tile grout ( or plaster of paris if you have any) and water and stir well or it will be a bit artexy. When dry varnish. One of the longest lasting painted pots I did with neat acrylic paint.

    What a brilliant find!
If you find that the little wheels start to make dents in your floors then this sort of thing can be useful to disperse the weight more:
