yes, A S paint & wax. Here's another table i did and a brown wooden duck.

it looked the same as the one in the pic below but is actually a different one as I've bought 3 recently in different places.

I have been lurking here for quite a while slowly becoming more and more inspired to do up my furniture which is all browns and thick varnish.

I have ordered some ESP which will hopefully be here next week.

Now question - do I literally do as been described on here and on their website, just paint it on thinly, wipe it off leave min of two hours then paint with my chosen choice and colour?

I have health problems that stop me doing as done in past which was to sand down and redo from scratch, so had given up ever doing anything again but you have all inspired me so very much, love everything.

Does it have to be any special paint like chalk paint or can you just literally anything - as thinking about colours and need to know what paint to buy?

I want to start with our dining table and chairs, not sure what its made from but bought new in 1974 by MIL. Seats appeared to be glued on so not quite sure if I should try and recover them while in situ or remove them, but then what glue is best to use to put them back. Still not decided on what fabric I will use or pattern. I plan to staple the fabric on this time where as in the past I have sewn material in place but that set the chair seats screwed into place.

Any advice would be great, thanks - will take a photo of the table tomorrow when hubby at work, as he has no imagination and can never 'see' things when I say we will decorate like this or that, but then when its done he will say how nice it is, but before he will moan so not bothered at him moaning.

Then if this works out I plan to do a chest of drawers in my bedroom as rest of furniture cream but this chest is brown and looks odd.

I love everything you have all done, fantastic

    Any advice greatly received

    Thanks

Hi prepareathome, why not start with the chest of drawers first as it's a one off piece. By the end of that you will know what you're doing and be ready to tackle the dining room furniture.
I haven't used ESP but you don't have to use chalk paint with it. Chalk paint is the paint that just sticks without sanding or priming so you wouldn't need to ESP first.

Thanks for the advice over doing the chest first, you are right, best then can sort out any mistakes on it, and its hidden in the bedroom.....

Prepareathome, I'd just hate you to start on one chair of a set and think that furniture painting isn't for you! Then your whole dining room set is in jeopardy. If you start on the chest you will learn as you go and know exactly what you're doing on the big stuff!

  • oh lovely! well done

  • I'm wondering if any seasoned shabby chic peep could help me with something. I have a gorgeous dressing table, I think its Art Deco in a walnut veneer with a huge circular mirror on top. I've had it for a number of years and always adored it but lately I've not been feeling the love. The veneer is very tatty in places, bits have completely fallen off and unfortunately I seem to have added even more ring marks to what was already there. I'm not after a shabby chic effect per se but I am quite interested in maybe painting it a solid block colour, maybe a turquoise as our bedroom is varying shades of blue. Or a nice pale bluey grey colour.

Has anyone experience of painting wooden veneers? What was the final finish like?
