thanks emma kate the Craig Rose paint is chalky I think I will varnish the mirror. I have just brought an old wooden toy chest so will be doing this up next, any tips???
A toy chest is going to take a beating. How about a more durable finish like oil based gloss or oil based egg shell? Or if you're going to use water based paint you'll need to protect it well.
I recently got some really cute stencils from ebay in america that say things like 'antiques' and 'french antiques' and 'fleamarket'. How about something like that to shabby chic it up?

thanks what would I protect it with? If I used an oil based paint then would I have to prime it 1st, if so what primer would you suggest. Sorry I am new to this so keep asking questions lol x

You'd protect it with wax or varnish. If you used oil based you'd need to prime first, and if you used undercoat that would make it look really smooth too. What is the surface now? Is it bare wood or painted or varnished? Is it pine? Because pine also needs precautions taken with the knots. What you use to paint it depends on what finish you're starting with. Ask away!

yes it is pine and it is varnished. I love the look of the chalk paint, so would I need to prime it. I'm confussed now lol

If it was varnished I imagine the knots would be treated already. If you're wanting to use chalk paint you wouldn't need to prime. Just paint and wax. Enjoy!
