I use the BIN primer - I did wonder if they had changed the formula as I find there is definitely a knack, now I get it lol!

do you have to use Annie Sloan wax or is there a cheaper alternative?
You can use any! I prefer Liberon waxes as the Annie Sloan is a bit sticky. And her dark wax is very dark! I like Liberon beeswax with turpentine in Antique pine as it is less dark but still 'dirties' your paint up nicely. Stinks to high heaven!

After reading some of this thread I brought a coat peg and a mirror for my daughters' bedroom. I painted them with some chalky paint this weekend - they look fab I'm very happy with them. Do I need to wax them if so where do I buy it from please. I didn't use Annie Sloan paint I used Craig and Rose which I thought was lovely and they do loads of colours too

It depends what kind of paint you used. I'm not familiar with Craig and Rose. Is it emulsion (matt texture, designed to go on your wall) or shinier like a gloss or eggshell? Generally if the paint is chalk paint, or matt emulsion it will need protecting from marking with either a varnish or wax.
You can use any wax designed to go on furniture which you might find at the supermarket or the hardware store. Rub it on, let it penetrate and dry and buff it off.

No, you don't need to wax them. I painted some stuff with Craig & Rose eggshell last year didn't apply any wax or anything and they look fantastic. I did some bedside cabinets so they get bashed about and used a lot and the finish is still as it should be. Mine's more of a Scandi look rather than shabby chic though, it's probably personal preference.
  • hello all,

looking for a little bit of refurb advice, bought something very similar to this at the local CS at weekend:
    http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=wooden+magazine+rack+table&hl=en&sa=X&tbm=isch&prmd=imvns&tbnid=5VVLXJp9rpCb5M:&imgrefurl=http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/magazine-racktable-small-quality-dark-wood-excellent-condition-15/97073294&docid=wCpXKzA1sqAUlM&itg=1&imgurl=http://is02.thegumtree.com/image/big/112925474.jpg&w=358&h=268&ei=WVWeT5r3I4eDhQef_JWUDw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=169&vpy=91&dur=63&hovh=194&hovw=260&tx=100&ty=88&sig=115837890134155448447&page=1&tbnh=121&tbnw=161&start=0&ndsp=40&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0,i:67&biw=1619&bih=737
the only difference being 1- mines is a lot more tattier looking and in need of TLC 2- my magrack doesnt have wooden spindals, its more of a wicker/woven look 3-my mag rack is light wood, not dark.

Im a refurb virgin, and want to transform this into a work of art.

Has anyone successfully covered a table top with fabric? or paper? do you varnish it to finish? i want to try and create something different, but at the same time, i dont want it to look too out there and OOT.

For your table, what about oilcloth? You can pull it taut and staple to the underside if theres a lip? More durable than paper or fabric. You can get some really cool designs. If you really want paper or fabric you might want to get a glass top cut to protect the surface. Depends if its a table you eat off or just a little decorative table.

For the magazine rack, spray paint might be a good option if it's part wicker and part wood. You'll need to sand and prime the wood first though. I don't know if chalk paint would be good on a woven surface. I doubt it.
What sort of look are you after?

  • thanks emma, some great advice. I want to create a shabby chic look, butafter giving it some thought i may stick to paint only on this project (just togive me a pinch of experience for next time)

I've had a look through some images on google for inspiration.

I would like to use this rack and table and I imagine it'll get a lot of useespecially as a small coffee table. Would you recommend I finish the table topwith a varnish to avoid too much wear, or perhaps the wear is part of the charm?

Okay, If you haven't done this before you can do it three ways.
Old fashioned way: sand lightly to provide a key, prime and paint. Protect if need be with wax or varnish (depending what paint you used)
Chalk paint way: no sanding just paint and then wax
Zinsser way: get zinsser bullseye primer and prime without sanding, then paint and protect if need be as before.
If you are a painting virgin you might want to just use an eggshell paint finish as that needs no further protection and it gives a nice flat look. If you are sanding, remember to hoover off all your dust and give it a wipe down before you prime. And you probably need to use a coaster when you put your cuppa down on it. Good luck with that!
