ive just read your blog and have to say i dont envy you living in your home whilst building, i hope it all goes well for you.

we lived in a house we built happily for 19 yrs until my dh came home one day and said he wanted to buy a property he had seen on a very quiet lane up the hill behind us.

it was up for sealed bids and i never thought we would get it so in the end after much persuading i agreed to put in our bid, guess what we got itt hat was 2 yrs ago this month june 2009,

we had problems with the planning officer and had to keep changing our plans to get them passed.

we put our home on the market in jan/feb 2010 and all was quiet for a while i was glad as didnt really want to move then the first person who came to see it offerered us the full asking price everything was done and dusted within 8 weeks,

we moved out last march into another house we own in the village. and work started on rebuilding what was to become or new family home.

it was a nightmare from start to finish, everything that could go wrong did and we are not new to house building so were fully aware of what can happen, everyone in our village says it should have been on the grand designs show but i have to say with my dh it would have been a show full of bleeps!

we actually got in on new years eve 2010, the saving grace was that we had someone who wanted to rent the house we were in so as we moved out they were due in on jan 3rd so at least we didnt have to worry about that one.

    we went from this
    original_house.jpg

    To this
    house_now.jpg

this is not the full extent on the right of the porch theres more of the house.

you will see there are two porches thats because we built a self contained holiday let, which was all part of my dh grand plane for this property.
wow wow wow - it is absolutely awesome hun - I know what you mean - whatever we have done - there are always many flies in the ointment and the thought if it to be honest scares me

we at the minute cant even finalise the internal plan - every idea that we have we love most things about but theres always a but - mainly the flow - and having to walk through the lounge to be able to get to the kitchen - at the mo the kitchen door is straight off the hallway opposite the front door - but we are thinking of extending daughters bedroom which any extension would mean losing the doorway - aaaagggghhhh my head is spinning and spinning - with so many ideas but at this minute in time none of them tick all the boxes - hoping for a sign - a miracle - something to push us in the right direction but you and your beautiful home - well wow what a transformation - how long did all the building work take???

Thanks Tara - I have a load more in my "Loving Kitchens" file - will upload in next few days! Our builder came last night and threw various ideas at us and now I am completely mystified as to what direction to go now - so at the mo I may be having my new kitchen in a phone box - lol - aaaghh Hubby says he prefers it when walking into a place - seeing something and thinking yes I like this - lets put an offer in rather than wonder what that would look like if we did x, y and z. We have looked elsewhere but havent seen anything and have emotional ties here so we are staying put but aaagh which way to go - hmmm will keep you posted (or bored)

we started in march last year basically we took down the outer 4 walls and took off the roof, reconfigured the space that was left inside of the original 3 bed traditional bungalow.

then we added the left hand side (holiday let) added on a sun room at the back where there was just a raised pation (in the loose sense of the word) area

took down the rear flat roof lounge dinning area and re built it but went up to give us our master area.

then re built all around the whole structure in natural stone and put a new SIP roof right across the top.

so its now a dorma bungalow but because we are on a hill we slope away at the back so the back of the house is way off the ground.

    heres a rough shot
    back_new.jpg

looking from the left to right that is now all a glass balcony and the central main section under the 3 pane glass doors will eventuall be a conservatory gym as thats at ground level

we are getting grass next week for the back garden so once its all done i will take some proper shots.

you can see the back of the holiday let on the far right of the photo.

so all in all 9 months we had to sack the first builder after only 3 days on site and then had to wait about 6 weeks for the new builder/stonemason to start.

we got in on new years eve

    hmo - love your house
would like to do something similar to our old bungalow - can I be really cheeky and ask approx cost?

Must say the thought of what could go wrong, how to find a good builder, would it be worth it etc worry me.

    Your house is lovely though

probably in the region of £190,000.00 everything is new and all low maintenance, so tinted glass at back as south facing, self cleaning glass on big 3 pane sliding door (that door is 6metres wide) sun room roof also self cleaning as its a lantern and high, air to water heat pump running underfloor heating everywhere, SIP roof it goes on and on and in truth we are not finished.

we still have to build the conservatory under the balcony and tank the storage area thats there to make it into the gym area dont know if we will do that probably but dont know when.

ive added a few more photos to my blog, cannot wait for the grass to be laid next week i think it will make the back look even better as we look out onto it.

hmo, that is one seriously beautiful house.
Please do not point me in the direction of peoples blogs, I need to shift my lazy carcass, which is difficult to do when I can waste time on here. Drooling over blogs just means that in a few years time, I will be found crushed under a pile of crap that I've bought in order to do something to it.
