Good evening, I was just wondering what kind of paint you all use for painting furniture. I've got a few pieces I'd love to paint but all the tutorials etc I've found seem to talk about American paints that I've never heard of. Do you use emulsion or skirting board (gloss/satin etc)? Do you use a roller or a brush?

    Thanks. :)

I use Dulux satincoat for painting furniture. It gives a lovely finish.

I am almost getting to the stage where I will be able to show a picture of my finished shabbied downstairs toilet. I have also tiled my utility room and am ready to finish reframing the windows. Once they're done, I will be able to make up the blinds for in there from my bargainous charity shop haul fabric.
Once that's all done, I'll be able to paint the door which means I'll be able to paint my sewing box (I'm not getting a roller dirty twice when I can just save the paint job for the next time I need to use that paint. Wastes paint and time IMO.

Kevie, that is an absolutely cracking piece of furniture. You've done a stellar job on that :D. Can I have it? Please? :D Not sure where I'll put it yet but I'm sure I can squeeze it in somewhere. I'll swap it for a loud child if you like?

I have been reading the last few pages and feel rather inspired.Although i cannot say my home is shabby chic, it does have minor parts that are.I live in a solid council house that is a nightmare to decorate. Its almost cottagey .(built in 1934)The walls have years of several layers of wallpaper on and its definitely going to take `years` to do.I can see from this thread that little touches and certain items really do give homes a massive boost. My home is a mish mash of styles but i have realised that is just me.I have a lovely oak dresser and a beautiful barley twist dining table. In the same room sits a deep red leather sofa and leather chairs accompany the table. Not everyones taste but at last I am comfortable with mine. Its great reading this thread and i do wish i had more patience to paint old furniture.Happy to sit and watch and `borrow` tips.:)

    Your home sounds perfect.

All you sewers out there I don't know whether you've come across this blog but I love this sewing cupboard

Am I allowed to be cheeky as I think I just have been - I have just put a long post on my blog all about shabby chic kitchens - hopes and dreams/inspirations - and to start it off I have borrowed a Home sign that I think I got from either here or the sewing room thread - I cannot for the life of me think who put it up and I dont know if they made it or if they borrowed it - I want to give credit to them if it was theirs or remove if they didnt want me to place it = I also wondered if anyone had any ideas and inspirations of their own that they wanted to share - can I be really naughty and ask you to have a peek and let me know what you would love if you were doinga shabby chic kitchen - thank you Elaine x

ive just read your blog and have to say i dont envy you living in your home whilst building, i hope it all goes well for you.

we lived in a house we built happily for 19 yrs until my dh came home one day and said he wanted to buy a property he had seen on a very quiet lane up the hill behind us.

it was up for sealed bids and i never thought we would get it so in the end after much persuading i agreed to put in our bid, guess what we got itt hat was 2 yrs ago this month june 2009,

we had problems with the planning officer and had to keep changing our plans to get them passed.

we put our home on the market in jan/feb 2010 and all was quiet for a while i was glad as didnt really want to move then the first person who came to see it offerered us the full asking price everything was done and dusted within 8 weeks,

we moved out last march into another house we own in the village. and work started on rebuilding what was to become or new family home.

it was a nightmare from start to finish, everything that could go wrong did and we are not new to house building so were fully aware of what can happen, everyone in our village says it should have been on the grand designs show but i have to say with my dh it would have been a show full of bleeps!

we actually got in on new years eve 2010, the saving grace was that we had someone who wanted to rent the house we were in so as we moved out they were due in on jan 3rd so at least we didnt have to worry about that one.

    we went from this
    original_house.jpg

    To this
    house_now.jpg

this is not the full extent on the right of the porch theres more of the house.

you will see there are two porches thats because we built a self contained holiday let, which was all part of my dh grand plane for this property.
