Well I bought a couple of items from the carboot and am really excited to get started :j

Went to homebase and saw the F&B paint, almost fainted at the price but if it goes a long way and looks nice then its worth it :)

Ive got a question though that I need urgent help with...

Ive found a gorgeous Welsh Dresser that I really like the design of and its only £50 but I want to paint it all white/cream except the top of the bottom bit (if that makes sense??) I want that kind of a pine colour but the unit is like a very dark mahogany colour so how would I do that bit? Or is it impossible to do?

I put a £5 deposit on it and have to collect it tomorrow but I don't want to get it if I can't get it to be the colour I want, really want the top of the bottom bit to be a piney colour

Unless the dresser actually is mahogany (very unlikely) then it has been stained a dark colour (probably to imitate aged oak). You can sand the top and stain it to suit or just oil or wax it.

lol I thought it would be more difficult than that :o it looks old so I was worried it would be complicated to do, what Ive read on google involves bleaching it

Seakay, you need to check that it is solid wood, and not laminate. I have bought laminate before and even the very good stuff cannot be sanded and oiled/varnished. But if it is a traditional dresser, the likelihood is that it is pine or oak that has been stained dark. Ask befoe you buy - they may be able to help!

I want this and I am goint to paint it blue like the one in the Cath Kidston shop in Harrogate. Beautiful, isnt it? ** link removed by annie-c** It will be a pain replacing the broken glass though, but I really dont care, its LOVE :D

Louise it is lovely but if you want it for 99p it is best to remove the ebay link... the posters on here may be lovely peeps, but there are thousands of readers and one of them may end up bidding against you ;)

Its from a furniture recycling centre (like a charity shop) so I don't think they'll have much of an idea, I don't think it was laminate so its probably like you say oak stained darker.

I was thinking that if i painted it all white - well I was thinking F&B's white tie, and maybe tried to find a vinyl table cloth to go on top? Or would that look silly? I was thinking a buying some oil cloth and cutting it to size but would it fray? Ive never actually seen oil cloth before so sorry if thats a stupid question!

EDIT: It was a silly question, Ive read that it doesn't fray so I could just cut some oil cloth and lay it on

Picked up some lovely bits at the car boots yesterday

Set of dinner, side plates & pasta bowls for £1.25 (may as well go mismatched now I've broken one of the little set I bought a few years ago!)

And this lovely pine plate rack for £2! Going to give it the shabby chic treatment, either in cream or French grey. I picked up a few other little bits, photos on the blog if you're interested.

Looking forwards to seeing all these makeovers that are being discussed!

Gosh I never knew that you could get laminate Welsh Dressers! If I ever decide to buy another one I'll keep an eye out for that. Come to that I've never seen a real oak Welsh Dresser, just pine ones that have been painted or stained.
