Please please people bear in mind that it isn't all wonderful here. Winter is an absolute nightmare out in the sticks, delivery companies sometimes refuse to deliver, unfortunately you will get three months of the year when life can be tough. Also, it may seem absolutely ideal for children, but as they go can become problematic, children in very remote locations can't just pop round to their friends houses in a lot of cases. Please don't think I am being purposely negative, but I just wanted to point out that yes, it is the best place on earth to live for three seasons of the year, but Winter is a whole different matter.

I have dreamed about this for a while. However, having young children changed my mind. I remember having friends at school who couldn't get to the local disco or any of the museum/youth clubs because they lived rurally. It really ruined their adolescence.

So I am with you mentally but will carry on with my allotment and still live in a smallish town.

You are lucky if you own properties that can be rented. So you will always have an income.

Sorry, I just read that it's BB that has properties that can be rented.

Good luck.x

I have noticed that a lot of my friends have moved for rural locations in the last year or so, saying that the children really needed to be nearer friends and activities, I think generally the children were around the 13/14 age group. Personally I dread the day when I am faced with that decision:(

• toontron and mrs crafty thankyou for your comments :D very good points, i think i will have to list all the benefits and disadvantages.;)
also we are going to look at all area`s, when i think of rural ,i think i propably mean more semi than completely. there are lots of villages around here in the countryside, which something like that might be better considering with your views.
i also have to take into account, we will need to be fairly near to a primary and a secondary school, and of course a doctors (with young kids.) :p
this is not something we will rush into, not just for money reasons but family, but it would be nice to not be completely surrounded by houses. and to have a bit more land for growing and some animals.:D
One day I will live in a cabin in the woods
• As Per Pinks post, this has dropped down the OS board and you have had some fantastic input already from the OSers. I have moved this to How much have you saved?!

Please don't feel this thread will die just because it is being moved to a more appropriate board. For a start, OSers will see the redirect for a week, and you have a new captive audience in this board, so it is actually being exposed to twice as many people. Plus, if you keep posting, it will not be lost :)

Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

Good luck with your OS dream:j:D

• Count me in! I love your idea Betterlife and it sounds as though you're doing really well so far. Because of the interest rates tumbling as they are, I would recommend using the money you're saving to either invest in items to re-sell (the vintage handbags sound as though they are doing well for you) or, alternatively, what about putting a small amount in Premium Bonds? The beauty of this is that your money isn't lost (like it would be if you played the Lottery each week) and there's a small chance that you could win some money. Also, the amount of interest you'd earn on keeping a few £100 pounds in the bank are likely to be pennies. If you can save a set amount each month, regular savers accounts seem to offer better rates than normal savings accounts.
I'm trying to adopt an OS way of living so that I can retire early and, also, buy a house again. (I had to rent when my hubby and I split up). I found it quite tough initially (mainly getting out of the habit of spending for the sake of it). Now though, I get a genuine buzz when I get freebies, cheap meals (from vouchers/special offers) and foraging. (Is it me, or do blackberries taste so much nicer when you've picked them for free?)
The idea of keeping a picture of your dream house in your purse (not sure who posted that idea) is a brilliant one.
Best of luck everyone with achieving their dreams

Hi betterlife and everyone, how goes it?# Hope you're all OK!
Just checking in to let you know that I haven't lost the thread, well, not this one anyway, the metaphorical thread of health and sanity, well that is another thing entirely?
Have taken a few tiny steps towards preparing for winter in line with the 'dream' - which largely means having chimneys swept and getting insulation sorted (it will be done on Friday) so that the house is a bit warmer and the open fires a little more productive, another step towards making this house the dream cottage (even if it is just up the road from the town centre)!

I Envy u guys i rly do, i would love a semi rural house, we are a one waged family but hubby has decent wage so currently saving about 400 per month although its not always going to be that much. We are still young im 23 and hubby 25, and we have a 2 yr old daughter, we own our current house with mortgage but realistically, even if we managed to save 5k a year (ands its not always going to be realistic ot save 400per month) for the next 20years, thats 100k saved - not enough for a county house.

Is this why they are only dreams? i mean im all for will power but would it ever really happen for me? im not sure.. :(
