I Phone without a contract

Hi all

I just wanted some advice for my husband. I bought him a cheap as chips Nokia for Xmas 2009, and signed up for a 2 year contract with 02, so he still has 15 months left on this. He has since, shown an interest in getting an I-phone. But he's tied into this current contract, any ideas on either where to get a good unlocked I-phone or any contract clauses that may help me?

Thanks all in advance :)

  • The only place to buy an unlocked iPhone 4 is at Apple, either online or in-store. Chances are, however, that if your husband has a "cheap as chips" Nokia then the contract he's on won't be much good for an iPhone and the sim won't fit anyway. O2 will let him change his tariff after 12 months but this isn't classed as an upgrade and there will be a limit as to what he can change the tariff to and they won't let him change his phone. If he doesn't have data on his contract at the moment, he may be allowed to add it as a bolt-on but this will cost extra. He may also find that O2 might be "funny" about giving him a micro-sim for an iPhone. This part, at least, is easily resolved by buying a sim-cutter and making your own micro-sim.

    Hope this helps.

  • Ex - O2 are fine about giving you a micro sim. They will switch your current sim over to a microsim in store and a couple of hours later your existing sim goes dead and the micro is activated. The microsim is inside a normal sim shaped "press out" so you can use it in your existing phone until the iPhone arrives.

Once you get your iPhone, you can continue on your existing contract but they recommend you switch to an iPhone one. Dial 202 from your phone and they will advise you of the options and costs. They view this as a complete tariff change, so they will quite happily do the move mid month. If you got him a "cheap as chips" phone, I presume your current tariff doesn't include data so the switch to an iPhone tariff will be likely to cost you about £10 per month including the data allowance.
In the beginning, the universe was created. This made a lot of people very angry and was widely regarded as a bad move.
