I'm going to make my own dress, and have a design in my head (almost matched by an actual dress pattern that exists - woohoo!)

I don't have anything to add to the advice you've been given about your dilemma (I think you've had a lot of good advice across the board!). And I'm in awe about the fact that you are designing and making your own dress!

I'd just suggest that you try on some dresses in a similar design to the one that you have in your head - just to make sure that it works on you.

A very dear friend of mine once had the chance to have a special occasion dress made to measure, and fell in love with a particular style, made in her favourite colour.

To my mind, she looked lovely. However, she felt that it showed off all her 'flaws', that it was unflattering, and it ruined her day :(. If she had tried on similar styles beforehand, it would have given her the chance to change the design if she really felt it wasn't right for her.

(From the hints that you're dropping about style and colour your idea sounds awesome, by the way!)
  • Speaking to him is probably the best way forward! I agree with what others have said about trying some on - I had a certain thing in mind and what I got is completely different - not burgundy which I was having but post box red - no straps which I was adamant I was having. They straps and burgundy just looked too dark! Made me look shorter than my 5ft3 and fatter than my size 16! But again that was just personal opinion and me in particular!
