o2 home phone and 0844, 0871 international call charging and override providers

Okay I have switched to o2 now and I called an 084442 number which is advertised at 4p a min but o2 have charged me 7.9p a min as listed in their own price list. So obviously o2 charge their own rate for these numbers rather than the advertised BT rate.
I think this is unfair and the telecoms regulator needs to actually regulate the industry rather than kiss !!!. We should all be charged the advertised rate irrespective of who provides your service and they shouldn't be able to get away with small print like "from a BT line, other operators will charge more".0 -

But you have been charged the advertised rate for the service.0 -
Exactly. silps has switched to O2 and, consequently, is having to pay O2's published price for such calls.OldGreyFox wrote: »But you have been charged the advertised rate for the service.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. The advertised rate is 4p per min by the provider that lets me use the 0844 number to call internationally but o2 charge me 7.9p per min for using the same number.
Its just silly that everytime I use one of these numbers I have to look up in o2's pricing tables to see what I will actually be charged by o2.
Common sense would dictate that Ofcom needs to regulate this so customers are charged the same advertised rate by all providers and don't have to figure out what they will actually be charged on their bills everytime they use one of these numbers.0 -

For the life of me i cant see why you think you should pay a different suppliers rates to the one advertised by your supplier O2, or why you think Ofcom should regulate so that every supplier charges the same rates, which would result in no competition or money saving etc etc
Its not as if O2,s advertised rates come as a surprise to you. You previously said.
"Hi, I did check out the link and o2 pricing tables that can be downloaded. Yes, apparently it will cost me about double for using the 0844 type numbers but I don't make that many calls with these and overall I am still saving about £10 a month"0 -

If you believe that then shouldn't it also be the case that all telcom providers charge the same for international calls as well.
There wouldn't be any requirement or market for places like 1899.

What is the diffence between that and buying anything, anywhere? Its just silly that everytime I use one of these numbers I have to look up in o2's pricing tables to see what I will actually be charged by o2.
If you were going to buy, say, a new TV, you'd check what price the shop you were going to buy it from would charge for the model you wanted, wouldn't you?
The only difference is that, in this case, you're buying a service.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Common sense should dictate that if you don't like the O2 tariffs you might consider using other methods to reach such numbers.
There are providers who would charge you 5 or 6 pence a minute for 0844 numbers and 10 to 12 pence for 08710 -
anyone tried the g22 number? Its still listed as a connection charge only number. Is that correct?0
