Webcam/video call problem

Hello.
I have a HP laptop with webcam. Until a while ago, when on Messenger, I could invite a friend to share webcam or videocall. The little symbol by the side of my picture on Messenger showed the little camera symbol and allowed me to click on webcam or video call.
Then I had to do a system restore (I caught a very nasty virus, despite having Norton) and of course, I had to install stuff like Messenger again.
I also installed the free AVG as I had lost my paid-for Norton.
Since then, it only allows me to click on videocall - and when I send the invite, it keeps ringing but the whole Messenger freezes and I have to restart my computer.
My son, who is far more computer literate than me, spent 2 hours last night with me, trying to sort it. It froze everytime I clicked videocall (which I do not want anyway - I just want normal Messenger with the webcam)
He deleted Messenger and installed an earlier version - after all the installation was done, it would not run - said I needed to update to a newer version. Which we did. And of course, the same old problem - no webcam choice, just videocall - which froze again!:(
My webcam is working normally (except on Messenger!)....can anyone help?
...and in simple terms, please!
Thank you XX

Get your son to back up your important data and then run a Factory Restore. Much better than wasting hours for nothing....or is that what you meant by a System Restore?

What is the make and model number of your computer?

I think I meant a factory restore! And that was a couple of months ago, and everything works fine now, other than this webcam thingy.
I did read that the latest messenger does not allow webcam, only videocall, which was why we tried an older version of Messenger, but we were surprised we could download it but not run it.
Do not know if this is what you asked for..but this is printed on the side of my laptop...SD.MS/Pro.MMC.XD (and Pavilion dv7)

Right - HP Pavilion dv7 notebook pc - is described as the model but I cannot find a number!

Apologies - turned it upsidedown and found this...dv7-2110sa

    It's still there: messenger.jpg

Windows Live Messenger comes from here now.

Anyway.... Download, install, update and run a Quick Scan with Malwarebytes' AntiMalware. When complete, choose 'Remove Selected' if there is anything to remove and Reboot your computer.

After restart, open the program again and go to 'Logs'. Double click on the log produced for today and post the contents here.

Next, download, install and run the HijackThis Version 2.0.4 installer and executable and use the Quick Start guide to enable you to produce a log for posting here too.
  • Wow! Thank you very much. I will have to wait for my son to come home because this is going over my head a little bit. I would not dare do this on my own, but I am very grateful for your help.
I will post the results here when the deed is done.

  • Out of interest, my menu/actions/video thing only comes up with..Start a Video Call and Get a webcam - the other 2 bits are missing.:(
  • I have managed this bit on my own! There seem to be no probs.

Do you actually have a webcam? If so, take a look at your Device Manager to see if it's there and working properly(your son can help with this).
  • Hello.

My son is at work but I have located Device Manager, clicked on the webcam bit which told me the device is working properly.

Try the same menu as in my pic, but choose Help > About Messenger

    Which version number is indicated?

Sorry about delay, icing a cake!
