They also seem to ignore the 11-hour daily rest entitlement. £6.50 an hour isn't bad, but finishing work one day at 9:30PM and starting at 6:00AM the next isn't really on.

DCFC I think you read the post wrongly.

Solomon said finish at 9.30 one night then back into the work the following morning at 6.30 ;)
  • Whilst not legal is it really that bad asking you to finish at 9.30pm one night and start the next night, it wouldn't be every day would it?

And I saw a debate on MSE that retail were exempt due to shifts but I'm not sure what happened to that

There is an exemption for workers in the the care/nursing sectors and for shift workers changing from one set shift pattern to the next. rota'ed employees are not shift workers. the WTD was created to prevent this type of abuse.

I think the OP is concerned about having to start early the next morning, not the next night.

Lidl and Aldi seem to pay more than the big supermarkets but they never seem to have many staff, i think you may find you're running around more expected to do everything from filling shelves and being on the till one minute and then unloading a wagon the next.

I'll second the comment about never having enough staff.
My local has about 8 checkouts only ever with about 2 in use.
Quite often you are stood there waiting to pay & theres no-one on the till as they are all running around putting stock out of the big refridgerated units, you can hear people complaining & quite often many just dump the things & go & while i'm ranting why do they not provide baskets?. I do like Lidl & shop there regulary but the staff are always at a minimum & look stressed, i feel they could do quite a bit to provide a better service.

Why not? A lot more sensible than finishing at 9:30pm then starting at 8:30am. That's a whole two-and-a-half hours - £16 - wasted. If you have only three such shifts per week you would lose £200 per month in wages!

Of course, you do not want to work all day all the time - but if you are working a late shift then there is no reason for not working early the following morning.

Edit: okay, just noticed your long commute so it is not suitable for you.

Yes there is. it's called the working time directive. specifically the section about "daily rest period".
