Sorry been helping someone set-up a router on the phone!
Right click on the Local Area Network connections icon in the system tray and Open Network Connections. Highlight your Local Area Connection (Ethernet) and then click Change settings of this Connection at the LHS. The box is on the window that pops up. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Create a new DWORD value, name it EnableBalloonTips, and set it equal to 0. If EnableBalloonTips is already there and equal to 1, set it equal to 0.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

I'd like to add to this thread, although it's a couple of weeks old.
I have a Dell E1505 notebook with a wireless 802.11n and a 10/100 wired nic. Stock out-of-the-box setup had only the wireless icon in the system tray. I've made a lot of changes as of late (disabling services, etc) and all is well EXCEPT that the wire nic (local area connection) cable unplugged icon is still in the system tray, even AFTER I unchecked the option to be notified. I checked all my network connections and every single one of them is unchecked. There is no explanation as far as I can tell that this icon should be visible. I don't want to disable this connection, because sometimes I'm wired, and sometimes I'm not.
Anyone have any suggestions?

EDIT: As a quick fix, I placed a shortcut in my quick launch toolbar for that network connection. When I right-click that shortcut, I get the option to enable/disable (depending on the current state of the connection). This also got rid of the annoying popup message about turning off the NIC when AC power is disconnected.0
