Huge elec bill

Options
I have an outstanding elec bill for £10,000. This covers July 2007 to July 2009. We did have some building work carried out during that period but I just cannot see how we are supposed to have used that amount of elec. We are a familyof four and live in a 5 bed house with gas central heating and a gas cooker.

We are in contention with our supplier but the numbers on the meter seem to match up.

I dont mind paying for what I've used but £10k!!!!!!!!!!

Yours in despair.

Big Al

If the meter readings on the bill are an accurate reflection of the actual meter readings at the time, then the bill is probably correct.

The only other option is that the meter is faulty ... but why have you left it so long? Weren't you getting regular bills at the time? Weren't you checking the bills at the time (if not otherwise taking regular checks on the meter)?

(Also could you go and delete that post you made in the other thread you dug up from 5 years ago please, now that you have done the right thing and started your own thread on your own issue :))

  • What sort of building work? Presumably there would've been some increase in electricity usage in this period?

The only thing I can think of to check is if there was a reading given wrongly? If you gave a reading of say 99000 when in fact the reading was 89000 and you then gave a correct reading of 90000 the bill could be assuming the meter has gone all the way round. It does seem a large bill, how does it compare to you usage now?

  • We were flooded and moved out for 15 months while the builders dried the property out and rebuilt it. They did use fans and driers but £10,000?????

We didn't get a bill for the time we were out although we continued paying our normal monthly debit of £80 and thought that would cover it.

Our usage now is down to normal usage of around £80/m.

  • Ok, if fans and driers were used to restore the house, and the insurance Company paid for this work. Does this not also include the drying mention by OP.

If so, get your insurance company inviolved.
  • I don't know how much they would use, I would guess it was a lot. Whether that would equate to 10k I'm not sure. The insurance co or the company they instructed may well have some idea, the power company might too but you might need to speak to some sort of energy efficiency bod.

A quick look at the hire sites at dryers they are about 1.5kw. Several of those running 24/7 for weeks or months will use up some but I would not think £10k worth.

Any electricity used by builders as a result of a buildings insurance claim should be covered by your insurance company, its definately worth contacting them and getting their advice,

Were your neighbours flooded too? If so, have they had huge electricity bills?

  • Clucking bell - what is the latest after checking the readings etc?

  • Well, there is an update........

The insurance says it will honour its side of things and is looking at around £5k of the liability which will cover the period we were out of the house and builders were knocking it about. I am still shocked to see how they could have run up a £5k bill even with fans and driers.... That still leaves us with a £5k bill for Oct 2008 to now and during that time we have been paying £80 a month and more recently 125/m by dd.

The lesson to be learned here is that green energy is bl**dy expensive - we have just moved to Scottish Power and reduced our bill by 46%!!!! Good insurance companies honour their debts and when your provider says "ignore the bill, you cant have used that much power in 2 years", don't ignore the bill.

Just be grateful it wasn't you!

    Regards
