Moving into self storage to alleviate the pressure of moving day

We are planning to DIY our moving. We are moving 50 miles away and had planned on using 2 luton vans to shift the 2 bed.
However, i ama little concerned that when we moved from the flat to here we had less stuff yet were were right up to 12pm on moving.
A self storage place 10 miles from the new house offers no min term storage and 4 weeks free on 200 sq ft. We were thinking of hiring a luton the weekend before to move 95% of our stuff to the self store place and on te day of departure, spend an hour or 2 loading the last from the house and moving these essetials in first before shuttling to and from the self store
to me this idea has merit, but wanted a second opinion.

I would guess that the 4 weeks free and no minimum term don't operate together - can't see it being completely free. But as long as the money isn't too much, well worth doing I'd say.
Was planning something similar myself but the purchase fell through so the storage has become a bit more long term.0 -
i emailed the storage place and they confirmed it in writing (that was the manager) so i can safely proceed with that
half the issue is that our stairwell used to be open plan (no sides) and we got furniture up but now we have put in rails, the space to get stuff down will be very very tight, hence wanting a weekend before to move the stuff as our buyer will not appreciate me hacking off the balustrades (albeit he will have to when he realises his stuff aint going up the stairs0 -
Sounds like a good idea. We used storage when moving from 1 bed flat to 3 bed house, but that was because we were having new carpets installed and the fitter gave us some money off his initial quote when we said there'd be no furniture.
Best thing for us was that the storage place was half a mile from the new house, AND they lent us their big transit van free for the day to shuttle stuff about! We only used the storage for a week, so for something like £30 we had storage for a week and a van free for 12 hours, awesome.
I wouldn't hesitate to do it again next time.0 -
Just checked a company offering similar and the 4 free weeks is subject to a minimum sized storage (25 sq ft) and a min of 8 weeks. However, I think they're offering free van hire for 24 hrs so might work out quite cheap overall.
Definitely worth looking into and considering to alleviate the stress and headache of moving on the same day/short time in between.

Not at all familiar with that company, but I use a similar outfit for my business and they regularly do "1 month for 1 penny" deals (which are useful whenever we need to expand and take on an additional unit). HOWEVER these always come with strings attached. Normally you're committed to at least one month at full price after the promotion has run out.
I'd be surprised if the company that you're looking at has left such a huge hole in their contract, so just make absolutely sure before you commit to anything...0 -
It also has the benefit that you can get the place sorted before you move all your stuff in. When we moved to our current place 2 years ago we had most of our stuff stored for a week or so so we could sort out the flooring at our new place. I think we'd camped out in every room before our main furniture arrived! It's much easier to move in in a controlled way.0

Putting the cost aside, it's certainly a great idea. I bet there's loads of stuff you don't use from year to year that could all go ahead of you, in fact, there's not much need for most of the stuff you have in your house. You could even sleep on the mattress on the floor for a week, or just on the floor, to make the move easier.
I'd definitely do it in two parts, using storage.0 -
Get a bigger van. Do it all in one go. Reduce the stress by getting proper removal company to do the lifting.
And get it over with!
You'll suffer from a massive energy drop when you move - so you may as well do it all at once.0 -
There's a storage place near me that do storage "from £5 a week". Which is pretty good if you just need a bit of room to store some things while you move house. There's no mention of free van hire but they do say you get a discount when you've rented storage space.
They've got a few facilities but they're North West (Cheshire/ Lancashire) based, so I don't know if they'd be useful to you...
