Surely there are others who have been in this situation. Surely he shouldnt have to quit university because he has been an active dad since the birth of his child and looked after his child, rather than just having his child one night per week or even less. Please help
  • He should apply for the grants as he is entitled to it.
Child tax credit has nothing to do with it, yes you have to be recieving CB to apply for it but it doesnt stop if child benefit is put on hold.
In fact, for my 2nd and 3rd child, i phoned hmrc to tell them id had a baby about 3 days after they were born, wasnt recieving CB yet and still got tax credits 4 days later.
You can, as a parent, nominate either parent to recieve the CB and CTC so i really cant see the problem.
I suppose student finance can best advise on this really.
Phone anonymously to get the information without it affecting said student.
Everyone who thanks me when ive helped will get a 5% share when I win this weeks Euromillions......:p

Tax credit info is needed to assess an entitlement to Childcare Grants. The child benefit is also needed as a means of proving who the child is mainly dependent on under Regulation 42(d)

That's not my area to advise in. I'll base my guidance on the regulations.

My understanding is that you cannot claim CCG for the same child for whom someone is receiving childcare element of WTC. Mother is already receiving this as she is working 16 hours per week, so he cannot put in a subsequent claim regardless of who has more custody of the child.
"On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." My hero, Mr Steer.
  • There is another option i suppose.
He could try and get a proper contact order in place that would work around his uni through the courts. The mother can get childcare help through wtc for when she needs it and father only has child when not in uni.
This is of course another topic and maybe better suited to the child support board where more people can advise.
