MOT Test Cover

The dealership in my local area is offering MOT Test Cover 3 months before my MOT in January.

I had a relatively big bill back in January and this cover should supposedly cover the bill up to £500. The cost of the cover is £25.

I think there is probably some stuff to fix in my car, come January. Should I just go for it? £25 is not alot, is it?:)

Isn't there a clause that says you must be within a month or two of your last test pass? And it won't cover wear and tear items surely? I would ask - Give me some examples of MOT failure items that would be covered by the policy and some that would not be.

There will be a maximum amount they will pay, check that out and see what you think.
Yesterday i had my MOT done. I was expecting a failure.....i have had work done every year, its one of those things thats gauranteed to happen! My car passed....but with 6 advisaries. My garage man tells me he passes just about everything with advisaries and then discusses it when you go in. I think that meant he talks you into doing the work by telling you how bad the things are.....
Thats not a bad outlook, but it would be if i had taken out the £25 fee you mention cos none of the work caused a failure...but the work does need doing, and i would have to pay.
  • Need to check... will be back with some info. No wear and tear items for obvious reasons, I remember that for sure.

The cover can only be done 3 months before the next test, so I'll need to get it sorted sharpish.

And it wouldn't cover any advisaries that were on your last pass.

I don't understand what "fails" would not be classed as "wear and tear"

Wear and tear covers pretty much everything a car can fail on on an MOT. And even if it doesn't they'll try and argue the toss. I wouldn't waste the £25 myself.

This is VOSA's new method testers have been over the last 12-18 months been asked to adopt, it's not "Honest Bob" doing you a favour.

Pass and Advise in the new mantra, the reasons are quite complicated to explain, but essentially it shifts liability onto the owner rather than VOSA in a lot of instances.

Rejection is now the last resort, advised items are much prefered.

Tester detects small play in balljoint.
Tester rejects balljoint play under "Excessive play in a ball joint" RfR
Customer is upset, balljoint is replaced, turns out xyz vehicle has a certain amout of balljoint play anyway. (Common on some vans.)

    OR

    Tester detects play in balljoint
    Tester advises balljoint
Balls then in the owners court:
    1) Actions work to have it replaced, their problem.
    2) Wheel folds under vehicle at the next high speed bump.

The famous "freyed seatbelt" incident a lot of testers may of heard of bought a lot of this in I believe. Public cryed to VOSA every time their car failed an MOT (99% of times perfectly justified) so now VOSA have reacted by bringing in the "P&A Mantra" in my opinion.

Another reason I'm not always behind the "Council MOT" stuff, when you test all sorts of vehicles day-in-day-out you do get to learn that what appears a failure on one car, may be perfectly safe, yet very dangerous on another. I wonder how many Fiesta owners have failed on rear shock mounting at a council test centre..... As if you don't often see Fiesta's, you'd take one look at them and reject it!

Why are you waiting until January to fix it? You are required by law to maintain your car to an MOT test standard at all times, not just on the day of the test.

My car will need some work for it's next MOT.

It's perfectly safe to drive in the mean-time.

It's not quite that "cut and dried."

Or let somebody who's never seen a car like yours stand there scratching his head............

Council Test Centres aren't the be all and end all, just trying finding a local MOT test centre. There are two within walking distance of my house, both of which offer an "MOT Only" service.

I feel sorry for the poor sods working in these council depots :(
