I'm with Virgin Media but moving to area which doesn't have fibre optic cables...

Options
I'm moving home soon and I'm trying to get my phone, broadband and TV set up before I move. I'm currently with Virgin Media but I am moving to an area which doesn't have fibre optic cables so I will no longer be able to get 50mb broadband. Should I switch to a different provider or stay with Virgin? And if I stay with Virgin, will I need to get a phone line with a different provider? Thanks in advance :)

If you want broadband and can't get cable then ADSL is the only viable option and that needs a working phone line.

Virgin National (the Virgin ADSL product) is not highly regarded.

Check what LLU options you will have available - http://www.samknows.com/broadband/search.php

If you are still in contract and don't switch to Virgin National then you will have to pay the early termination fee.

I probably just feeling my age today, but it never ceases to wind me up when people say they are in a non fibre optic area or whatever.
The entire telecomms system in the UK runs over optical fibres.
The difference is that in the case of BT the fibres terminate at the exchanges and the last mile or so is over copper cables, where as with Virgin the fibres terminate at the end of the street, and the last 100 yards or so is over copper coax.
BT are rolling out fibre to the cabinet in a number of areas, BT Infinity. This will never happen in rural areas though I guess.
That gum you like is coming back in style.

Thanks, I have checked and it says I have no LLU options. The only thing with a green tick next to it is:

The following services are available in your location:
    • BT Wholesale ADSL
    • BT Wholesale ADSL Max
So does that mean I can only get a phone line and broadband with BT?

    What is Virgin National?
Their standard non fibre internet connection.

Virgin National is VM's ADSL service.
No, you can use any ISP you like, but you won't be able to get an LLU service (LLU usually being cheaper because they don't have to pay BT Wholesale, but use their own kit in the exchange).

  • Thanks, looks like I'll have to stick with Virgin anyway as they'll otherwise charge me a hefty disconnection fee! If I keep Virgin, will I still have to get a BT line installed?
