Network storage / backup

I'm a bit miffed now but it's my fault for trying to do it on the cheap. I got a DGM HDD enclosure off ebay to go with my IDE drive.
The unit works perfectly via USB but network connectivity is flaky, virtually unusable. It's not a popular enclosure so there's not much info or advice out there on the web.
So unless I can work out how to improve the network link, I guess I'll just use it as a USB backup
