Network storage / backup

Hi

I want to get a network drive for back up purposes. Preferably just connected to my router running background synch software (heven't decided which software yet).

I looked at the Net Gear SC101 which looked like a good solution. I've already ordered a compatible IDE drive but as I was about to click BUY NOW on ebay when I noticed a windows 7 warning.
The unit is apparently incompatible. I'm not running windows 7 but I'm bound to be in the future.
Can anyone recommend another good NAS device that uses IDE drives? Currently using Vista but to include W7.
Thanks
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

    I've been Money Tipped!
I purchased a 500gb freecom usb drive late last year that simply plugs in and doesn't require a power supply. I use it at home on Vista and XP, and at work on Windows 7, 2003, 2008, so all flavours of windows and 32 and 64 bit systems.

    It's just brilliant.

Edit: Apologies OP, just noticed you want a network drive, still, if you decide USB is good enough then there's your answer ;)

If it works over a LAN, I fail to see how it can't be compatible with Windows 7 if its working with Vista.

It's something to do with the network security (LAN manager Authentication) built into Vista and 7, and older technology NAS boxes..
I had problems getting my Linkstation to work with Vista, there is a work around, but if you are buying new, may as well buy something that's going to work out of the box.

    Try here.....

Thanks, but they're all SATA and I've gone and bought an IDE HDD now.

Have a quick butchers on Ebay, you should be able to pick up a bargain there. The HDD's are a bit of a pain to swap out on some units, but there are plenty of cooking destructions on Youtube.
There are workarounds for getting these to run on Vista and 7, it involves messing with your security settings. Might be worth buying an external HDD caddy and mapping the drive on your network, works just the same...

I also had this problem after I switched to Win7, I have one of these, £9.99 at the time.

All I had was "network error 1208" when using 'normal' network route, but XP would connect fine.

I now connect from Win 7 via Firefox by putting "\\DGMserver\Files" (for example) into the address bar.
    Move along, nothing to see.

Netgear Stora is the unit to go for with 2 x 1TB drives.

Yes, but they have a SATA connection, not IDE.

If you do decide to go for a stora, read some of the reviews for it and then consider the excellent readynas series (again, SATA connections) which are much better than the storas IMO.
