I've had a colposcopy. There was a couple of times it hurt a bit but it wasn't too bad. It didnt feel any different to having something else sliding up and down up there

  • I had an abnormal smear in 1996 and had a colposcopy. It was absolutely fine, and nothing at all to worry about. Abit undignified - legs in stirrups (sp?) etc. I had some cells removed which was abit uncomfortable, but the nurse and doctor were excellent and very comforting.

I needed to take the day off work as I had a really bad tummyache afterwards - like period pain. I did bleed for about a week I think. But the next day I felt as right as rain!

For the next 5 years I had a smear annually which were all fine. I am now back on normal list and had my last smear a couple of months ago which was also fine.

Take someone with you for support. xxxxx

I had an abnormal smear about 20 years ago; they adopted a 'wait and see' approach and the repeat smear 6 months later was normal. I had to have annual smears for quite a few years though.
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.
  • I also had an abnormal one and they have said i need to go for another one 6 months later... i am waiting for the appointment to come through.

Hope everything is ok with you.

Yes, I had the same about 16 years ago. I had colposcopy and laser treatment (undignified and a bit sore afterwards, but was given soothing cream and an applicator as was fine within a couple of days). I had annual smears for a few years and all has been fine since.

Please don't worry about it. It's a testament to the cervical screening program that so many women are checked and, if necessary, interventions taken early to resolve anything before it comes serious.

    Best wishes.

How long do the results take to come back? I had a smear test early August and I'm still waiting for the results (Milton Keynes HA BTW)
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.
  • I had an abnormal smear a few months ago and needed a Colposcopy. The Colposcopy itself didnt hurt that much (more uncomfortable).Whilst i was there they decided i needed a biopsy,2 were taken and i must admit they hurt slightly more.
I was warned that i might get a little pain and bleeding afterwards like bad period pains/cramps which i did for a few days.
I got the results back within 2 weeks and i was over the moon as all was ok.I was told i would need another smear after 6 months.
The thing is you tend to worry when you have an abnormal smear that comes back and even more so when you need a colposcopy or biopsies.
Try not to worry about it (i know easier said than done).

  • when I had my colposcopy due to a few incomplete smears, I watched it all on a tv screen. I found it fascinating as you dont generally get to see "in there".

yes, i watched mine too, very odd :rotfl:

it was about 12 years ago so i don't know if much has changed. i've also had 'wait and see, have another smear in 6 months' results and they've been fine 6 months later.

when i went for the colposcopy i had my legs in stirrups and they insert a speculum (same as the sear test). they squirt some fluid inside, a bit like vinegar and it doesn't hurt. it shows up the abnormal cells as white.

when my sister had one they just removed the cells during the appointment by freezing them and that was that, a one week sex ban. with me they took a biopsy and i had to take antibiotics while waiting for the results, not because i had any kind of infection but just in case. the result came back a week or so later as moderate (CIN2) and they lasered the cells away, using the liquid to make the bad cells show up white. so i had 2 appointments but it's not always the same for everyone. you can watch on the screen as the cells go black and disintegrate when lasered  but it doesn't hurt, i promise. i am a scaredy cat and i scream during smear tests, this didn't hurt any more than a smear and you don't feel the laser at all. you have to stay still, you have to tell them if you're going to move.

although it looked much bigger on the screen my laser treated area is about the size of a 10p coin. i had some cream to use afterwards with an applicater, it's like inserting a tampon but it's cream, used that for about a week and they said no sex or tampons for 6-8 weeks.

i had to get a lift home after both appointments because of period pains but it wasn't terrbile. i don't know what they do to more severe cell changes, laser treatment isn't the only option. you will have to have smears every 6 months for a couple of years, then they go yearly and after that back to normal if you haven't had any problem smears.
