Honda brakes
Hi All,
Avid reader, never a poster.
I hope I can find some advice. Recently I heard a grinding noise coming from the brakes on my Honda Accord 2.2 55Reg.
I called up Honda and booked it in to have checked out (I drove a max of 20 miles from hearing the noise to check-in at Honda). I mentioned to the service guy I suspect the front brake pads may need to be replaced.
I got the usual call around lunch time. He said the fronts are fine, its the back brake pads and disks at a cost of £329 for parts and labour.
I was surprised because I had the back brakes done in Dec 2009 and have only done +- 9000 miles since then (80% of my driving is on the motorways)
I questioned this and they knocked it down to £259 with parts and labour considering Honda had done them previously.
When I called Honda head office to complain I was given a massive run around, It could be brake dust causing them to wear down quicker, and disks should only last 10 000 miles anyhow. I was asked to return the car to the Honda dealership for investigation.
They also asked if I had kept the old Pads for investigation....
My questions are, what is the average milage to expect from a set of back disks and pads, taking into account most of my travels are on the motorways. And I am no boy racer. It's a Accord not a Type R Civic (I wish)
Has anyone had any success dealing with Honda, I have to admit they are very polite and tolerant and did listen.
Any advice would be appreciated. I feel like Ive been done for £259 when the brakes should have lasted much longer.

I have a civic type r and have done almost 20,000 mostly town driving. I like a good spirited drive so the brakes do get abused form time to time. I still haven't changed any of my brakes or pads. Just recently had the rears off to check and give a good clean and they still have plenty of life in them. There is no way you should be needing new discs and pads after 9000 miles especially rear discs and pads as its the fronts which take the brunt of the braking force. The problem must surely be somthign else and not ware and tare, sticky caliper possibly? hand break too tight so that its still rubbing when off?
If your handy with a spanner its a simple job to change them yourself and will save you a good load of cash0 -
Boths pads and discs should last well past the 10k mark. If I was you I'd avoid going to stealers for your servicing and repair needs, the car isn't under any warranty now, try find from friends and people a decent independant local garge to do your work for you.0

Im going to take it back to the dealer and see what they say. They are a friendly bunch and prepared to listen. But I suspect the job done in December was not done correctly and this is why Im heading back only 10 months down the line to have the same thing done again.
The excuse of brake dust wearing the pads down quicker doesnt hold any cred with me. Maybe by 1 or 2 % but not 9000 miles for a set of pads.
Funny thing is, now the clutch is feeling a bit sticky since I took it in for the brakes!!!! I can see a expensive nightmare in my near future!!!
PS: The handbrake being set to tight on replacement sounds like a very plausable reason. 50 times better than flippen dust!0 -
Depends how often you drive. If you leave the car for days at a time and then drive then you're allowing the lightly braked rears discs to rust and pit.The man without a signature.0

£100 should see the job done. Max!
Brakes will last as long as you can make them.
£100 for discs, pads, and fitting? You'd be doing well.0 -
i think that honda couldn't of done the job right the first time.i would be holding out for better goodwill gesture..0

You can do all my mechanical work from now on! You're the guy that said a clutch should last the life of a vehicle aren't you?

Cars must be carp these days. My 20 year old Golf has never had new discs. They look alright and the car still stops and passes MoTs.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
