I moved my pepper and chilli plants into the garden while I was away over the summer. I have one chilli, and one plant with flowers on. Can I lift them and put them in pots to bring inside on a sunny windowsill?

rooster - your pepper flowers would have fared much better if you could have put them outside where they could have been pollinated. However, don't give up. If you are able to keep your peppers in a constantly warm room over winter, and are prepared to try hand pollinating the flowers, by "tickling" each flower with a tiny screwed up piece of kitchen tissue or mini paintbrush, you MAY get a few small peppers forming, although they won't like the low winter light levels.
I'm afraid the tomato flowers are not worth bothering with. They won't develop into tomatoes now. Far too late, and getting too cold.

Hey, they have been outside since May time :money:
Last year were slow developers as well. I might just give up on these and change the variety :o
  • exciting update - we have a new tomato and a new pepper! Hoorah!

Yes you can. Last Autumn I overwintered a couple of chilli plants on my lounge windowsill. They flowered and produced a couple more small fruits over the winter. As soon as I picked the last fruit, I pruned them back heavily, repotted them with a little fresh compost after teazing away some of the old compost from the roots and they produced another heavy crop of fruit this summer. I'm now repeating the process for a second year to see how long I can keep the plants going. But I'd move them indoors immediately as the nights are now getting pretty cold.
