It's getting mighty cold up here in Yorkshire, and I've still got pepper and tomato plants on my window sill with flowers on them! Is there much chance of them growing now, or shall I admit defeat?

Probably a bit late for the flowers but still of chance of ripening any green ones on the plant. Think I would pick off the flowers so all energy can go into the tomatoes you already have.
I'm no expert but that's would I did a couple of weeks ago and I've had loads of fruit ripening and have been picking nearly every day.

no airing cupboard I'm afraid!
I'm so reluctant to pull the flowers off - I have 1 teeny tiny pepper and about 15 flowers (on 5-6 plants), and just 3 flowers on the tom plant. grrr.0 -
It's unlikely that the flowers will develop into fruit now. It might be that there wasn't anything to pollinate the flowers0

I was away in the first week of September, I'd up untill then had one pepper off my pepper plant. With no-one to water my peppers while i was away (a week) I simply lifted the pot into the kitchen sink and filled with water.... and when I came back I had about 8 peppers at various stages of growth with another one or two on the way. (just last week)
I wouldn't think the weather where i am is going to be any better than Yorkshire... nothing to lose really!Would you ask the wolves to look after the sheep?

I sowed my pepper seeds in February and they have only been producing flowers for the past week or so, I am so disappointed

Is it worthwhile keeping the pepper plants over winter ?
My pepper plants are only small about 18 inches high and I was wondering if it's worth trying to keep them going through the winter for a flying start for next year.................0 -
I've heard chili peppers can be kept overwinter, so i guess normal peppers could be too. Does anyone know what temp they need to be kept at though? I wonder if they would need to be in the house rather than an unheated outbuilding. Can't be bothered with that!0

rooster - your pepper flowers would have fared much better if you could have put them outside where they could have been pollinated. However, don't give up. If you are able to keep your peppers in a constantly warm room over winter, and are prepared to try hand pollinating the flowers, by "tickling" each flower with a tiny screwed up piece of kitchen tissue or mini paintbrush, you MAY get a few small peppers forming, although they won't like the low winter light levels.
I'm afraid the tomato flowers are not worth bothering with. They won't develop into tomatoes now. Far too late, and getting too cold.0 -
I am growing toms for christmas. Mine seem to be going ok for the mo, but they need a lot of sun and warmth so a south facing window. They also should be special varieties so I'm not sure but I would keep going with them until they stop...Feb GC: £200 Spent: £190.790
