Are extended appliance warranties worth buying?

We are about to buy two large appliances, a Rangemeaster range cooker and a Samsung American Fridge freezer.
Is it worth adding on and extending the 2 year guarantee to 5 years for both? Think the cost is around £400 direct with Currys.
Or would the multi appliance cover from Warranty Direct be better?
Thanks

Neither. Put the money saved in a decent savings account in case you ever do have a failure. Modern electrical appliances are pretty reliable and cookers and fridge/freezers are not very complex. If there is a fault, it's generally in the manufacturing and will show up within 2 years.
You are aware that Curry's make most of their margin from pushing these useless policies? They charge vastly more than you can buy them independently for.No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
I agree with macman-it's a waste of money. just another way of getting money out of you.GE 36 *MFD may 2043

Put your cash on the fire.......... at least you'll get 5 minutes heat from it, which is making more use of it than buying those overpriced trash.0

extended warranties are a great way to make money.
for the seller.Get some gorm.0 -
For the items you list, it is not worth buying. I used to sell extended warranties for Mitsubishi tv. When the warranty may have been useful - in years 6, 7, 8, .....it was not on offer!0

Would definitely buy an extended warranty again if we bought another high-end washing machine.
But wouldn't bother for a cooker / fridge/freezer.0 -
Used our extended warranties a lot. With Warranty Direct, who send out a local tradesman.
Policy has paid for itself quite a few times over.
We never take out the policy at the time we buy, but register the appliance with the manufacturer and wait for the reminder in 12 months...
We also have boiler cover with British Gas, which has been excellent0 -

I wouldn't buy another high-end washing machine - we had three in about ten years and they produced no better end-results than our current £199 one that we bought 5 years ago. It's never had a spanner on it - the more complex ones were always going wrong.
High end tends to mean more washing programs - most of which are never used by the average user, even if they understand them.
If the cheap one goes wrong now, we will just dump it and buy another - I calculated that it only had to reach 18 months without a problem before it became a better financial deal than a high-end one with a maintenance contract. After 5 years, we're well in-pocket0
