You could always try putting a different linux on there assuming you have the horrid linux supplied with the original acers. This website may be of some help: http://www.ubuntu.com/netbook/get-ubuntu/download as a way of maybe saving yourself some money.0

All software problems, reinstall the operating system
Try alt + f10 or ctrl alt f10 at boot, after backing up your data.
hold down the on/off switch until it turns off instead of removing the battery!!

If you follow the link I've posted it explains how its done, its rather simple, honestly if you're getting rid of it anyway you might as well give it a go its gonna do no harm. Alternatively if your set on getting a new one I'd take your old one off you hands, I'd even pay the postage;)0

read the system recovery section in the manual, or try holding down ALT F10 at boot and doing erecovery - if it has a recovery parition, it should be back to new in 10 minutes. Backup data first.!!

Thanks to everyone for your advice. I managed to sort it by removing the grey box thing and the task bar thing reappeared! Hope it'll last. also made a recovery usb from the recovery dvd so fingers crossed can keep it going for a while longer. Thanks again0
