Washing machine tripping fuse box - Help please

This morning I switched on the washing machine and went away to do other things when I realised that the phone wasn't working. I checked the fuse box and the switch was up. By a process of elimination swithching off everything at the wall, I realised as soon as I switched the washing machine back on it tripped the fuse box again. Does anyone have an idea what is causing this. Is it the washing machine or electrics? Any help gratefully appreciated.

  • Confirm it's the washing machine and then it's the element that has failed. Parts about £25. A DIY job if you are confident. Unplug from power first.
  • Thanks am not sure it its something I would be able to do. It's a Miele W526 machine. Could you give me an idea how much an engineer would charge to fix it.

Can you confirm what exactly has tripped. Is it the RCD (wider than the other circuit breakers and has a test button) or a circuit breaker. If it is the RCD that has tripped, it could be a water leak shorting something out, or a number of other problems with the machine.
  • had this problem a couple of months ago.
Got a chap round to have a looky look and he said the drum had dropped and was scraping
on some electric things inside...that was knocking out the trip switch.
In a nutshell, the machine was old and a new one bought in the end.

  • Yes its the RCD that's tripping. Do you think that means it's the machine rather than the electrics. Have been looking for an element on line but cannot find one for my machine. It's a W526 model, about 5 years old I suppose.

You don't know for sure that it is the element. It could be a circuit/socket fault. Try plugging it into another socket, preferably on another ring main (use an extension lead). If it still trips, then it is a machine fault. If it clears, then there is a fault on the original circuit.

  • Right have plugged it into socket on landing and kitchen wall socket and machine has tripped RCD both times guess that points to the machine then. Machine now full of water again
